Mercruiser coil question

Ok, I have a 90 Mercruiser 5.7 350 Carb. was out on the water and boat back fired and quit running. I got it started again, and it ran for a while more and died. Just like key was shut off. I am getting fuel but no spark. If I take the plug wire off the coil that goes to the distrbutor I dont have any spark. I replaced the coil and that did not fix the problem. after some monkeying around it just started to run ..??? Obviously it is most likely a wiring issue, possibly my harness. Is there any way to bypass the wiring harness while on the water to get the boat started etc? My buddy thinks you can run a hot wire from the battery to the coil. Will this work??

Thanks

T

That's all there is to it. +battery terminal to + terminal on the coil.
Unless there is something wrong with the wiring from the ign. module to the distributor or the distributor sensor. It won't bypass any of that. Nothing can bypass that.

Thanks Don

IF the ign. module to the distributor or the distributor sensor's are bad, will that prevent the coil from sparking?

Probably a stupid qustion but I will throw it out there anyways...

Re: Mercruiser coil question

The coil doesn't spark at all unless the sensor and the module tells it to.

So let me just make sure I understand. If I take the wire off from the coil to the distributor, AND everything is running correctly. I will NOT see any spark?

Thanks again for the Ignition 101, Don...

If you take the wire off the coil to the dirstibutor, it will not run. Let alone correctly. No you won't see spark.

You need to get with Google.com and start learing how an ignition system works.
Just type in "Ignition system"

Here is one of the links you will find.
