Will you fly a flag on 9/11?

Just wondering if you plan to fly the American flag on 9/11?
I fly mine year round, so it will be up.

9/11 is a special day to me and I had almost forgot how close it was.

I don't know, but I do know that the President has to order the flag to be flown at half staff.

The President can do that but, I will fly my flag in any manner appropriate. Half staff doesn't have to have the orders of anyone. I can fly mine at half staff at anytime for a fellow fallen American.

My goodness..why do people get so upset on evey post here? A question was asked and answered honestly.
Maybe I should have said for government agancies, the President has to order it. But I guess they can do what they want as well.
Suppose someone will be upset about that as well.
All I was trying to do was see if people here were going to fly their flag. Sorry I posted.

Eric, don't be sorry! I was not on an attack. There have been instances in the past when people are told to fly the flag at half staff..... those times should not be told to people.... people should know. I lost friends in the 9-11 incident (being originally from NY) and I felt sorrow for the loss. On top of that I have know a few soldiers who were killed in Iraq and I feel bad for them too.

My point is that some people have passed away that no one remembers. Great people who achieved greatness and sacrificed alot of things during their life. Those are the people I remember.

Looking at it from outside the box..... there is not a day that goes by that we should remember the passing of some great people.

BTW you bet it will be half staff on 9-11 here.

I read somewhere that if you can't fly your flag at half-staff you can tie a black ribbon at the top of the flag pole the same size as one of the stripes and the same length as the flag.

My calendar says half staff till sundown. That is where mine will be until I return on the 12th.

Not only am I not flying the American flag on 9/11; I’m also not flying American Airlines on that day. Was scheduled to fly on 9/11 but changed my flight to 9/10 instead. I normally fly AA but I changed to fly on a foreign carrier (JAL) this time because I’ll cross the dateline, landing on 9/11.

I guess I have less than a little confidence in my gov’t’s ability to thwart terrorism. The bad guys like their anniversaries, the 5th is just a little too attractive. Let someone else risk their life to prove it’s safe to fly AA on 9/11 2006.

It is indeed a shame that we no longer teach flag ethics any longer. Growing up, my memory serves me that the flag was flown at 1/2 staff when ordered by the President. If a person was mourning a personal loss the proper flight was with a black ribbon the length of the flag and the width of the flag stripe.

To fly at 1/2 staff the flag is properly raised briskly to full staff the lowered to 1/2 staff. When lowering the flag at dusk, it is properly briskly raised to full staff then lowered slowly.

In the old days flags never touched the ground, never flew tattered, were not used as clothing and were ceremoniosly (sp) burned when retired.

I get all the free speech crap but they are things we should honor and I feel our flag is one of them.

I definitely agree with you though. It is a shame that a lot of patriotic etiquette is not taught anymore.
I live on a USAF base. They play Reveille at 0730, National Anthem at 1630, and Taps at 2200. My boys, when outside, at those times have been taught to show the proper respect. They have then gone on to set the example for the neighbor kids.
Now they all stop, turn toward the music and stand quietly until the last note.

The ONLY part I enjoyed in the USMC was saluting the flag up and down each day.
