I have a 1977 85hp Johnson that is not firing in the #3 cylinder,,, I changed out the #1 and #3 coils and it followed to #1 cylinder so OK I thought bad coil. Today I put on a new coil on the #3 and it still didn't fire so just out of curiosity I switched the #1 and #3 and it followed the #1. What could be causing this and how can I trouble shoot this. I do have a manual but do not have any testers available right at this moment.

Re: Still Not Firing

Are you moving the spark plugs with the coils?

Re: Still Not Firing

If you did things in the exact sequence that you described above, you may have replaced the wrong coil.

Re: Still Not Firing

After checking and changing plugs I can rule them out..as it fired at every cylinder except the #3

Re: Still Not Firing

Sorry ezeke if i confused you, It has always the bottom starboar cylinder...if i change the # 3coil to the #1 coil and switch around the wires in the power pack the #1 stops firing and #3 then fires even with the new coil.

Re: Still Not Firing

Have you cleaned and checked all of the wiring, especially the ground wires from the ignition coils?

Re: Still Not Firing

OK, I've checked all the grounds and I am getting spark to all cylinders except the #3. I hooked the #3 coil ground to the main ground on the block and still no spark.

In my seloc manual it says to check with a neon tester can this be done with an volt meter if so what is the correct procedure checking the coil?

also, Is there a way to check each individual coil?

Thaks,
jason

Re: Still Not Firing

A bad timer base, though not a common failure, can cause loss of one cylinder. You need peak reading voltmeter to test it.
