Engine identification

I just purchased this boat about a month ago and noticed that it has a substantial oil leak. I cant find the leak but it just leaks after you run it for a while and cut it off then it leaks while its not running. The guy that I purchased it from said that it was a 4.3 litre volvo but the intake has GM stamped on it. If I have to pull the engine to fix the leak then I want to go ahead and rebuild the engine. Is it possible that this is a GM and can conventional 4.3 automobile parts be used to do this? Thanks.

Re: Engine identification

Post the engine serial number and someone can tell you exactly what motor you have. The 4.3 is a gm based engine. Some auto parts can be used in a boat, some should not. If it is just an oil leak, then why rebuild the entire motor?

Re: Engine identification

Seems like alot of work to pull it just to fix an oil leak. Before this boat I had a 140 mercruiser in a similar sized boat that felt like it had alot more power.

Rebuilding an engine because of an oil leak sounds like an expensive proposition, especially if there is nothing wrong with the engine. There may be another problem causing the lack of power, rebuilding may not help at all.
You don't even know what you have, how do you expect to rebuild it?

Re: Engine identification

That brigs me back to my question, if its an automotive 4.3 gm engine, then I can rebuild it for around $700.00. including machine work. Just want to make it reliable for the family. It does show other signs of instability. The compression is un even by 30lbs each cylinder and a little oil smoking.
