I have purchased a 1960 Kelly Houseboat. It is 63 feet long,16 feet wide and made of steel. The engine is a 1960 chrysler marine slant six with straight forward drive. Boat & engine are in good condition but has been lived on for 10 years and has not been cranked. The engine is locked. Dose anyone have any info on the engine or Kelly Houseboat?

if it's similar to the slant 6's in the cars, they're indestructable, if cared for. i put over 300,000 miles on one, pictures man, post some pictures, like to see it.

As I recall for some applications they took the slant six and laid it right down on its' side. I never saw one in a boat but saw one on the showroom floor. As I recall they were available in 170 cu in and 225.
Basic procedures for any stuck auto engine should work. The NAPA marine catalog lists some ignition/electrical parts for these motors and it appears the 225 was built up at least to 1977.
You might stumble on a service manual on ebay.

The weak point on those engines is a nylon gear at the base of the distributor. It tends to crack and you lose your oil pump. It is a simple thing to check.

Those engines were some of the best built and easy to work on.

CaptianL, what everyone here says about the slant 6 is true. They are nearly indestructable. I bought a Plymouth Duster for 30 bucks one time, with a seized slant 6. Figured if I couldn't make it go, I'd get 10 times that much by partin' it out.

I dumped some liquid wrench down each spark plug hole, then came back two days later and turned the crank with a breaker bar. Then I started it, and drove it for 4 years with no trouble.
What I wouldn't give to have that old clatterbox today!!!

I would pull the distributor however, as BobVT says, and check that gear - they're prone to breaking.

Good Luck
Rick

Agreed they have to have been one of the most reliable engine's ever made. You can try to unlock the motor by draining the oil and filling the whole engine up wiith diesel fuel letting it set for a few day's, thourghly drian it and see it that free's it up. ( Or use tranny fluid the stuff's work's like a razor cleaner)

LOL, I use Coke to clean the top and post on batteries (nothing works better)... guess it's good for everything except drinking (unless mixed with rum) 8)
