Re: lightning strike - no spark

ok, so to 'disconnect' the wire, should I pull the wire and It's prong from the plug that connects to the coils? Or is there a simpler way?

Thanks for sticking with me on this. I was so psyched when I finally got the engine running great, and instantly at my wits end when this happened, because I was totally at a loss of where to start with my diagnosis. I have pretty rudimentary skills on that level, so you're teaching me a lot here.

You can pull the pins as you describe. You can also disconnect the big red harness plug at the engine and jump the starter. Either way you have to be prepared to choke the motor to turn it off.

Removing the pin is the more thorough because it gets closer to the power pack.

hey that worked. It started on the second try and ran great for a good half an hour or so.

So does this mean I need to hunt down a loose or bad wire on the engine harness? Or are the power packs I just bought already toasted?

Glad to hear it.

I think your power packs are fine.

You need to find the short in that harness. It could be the ignition, a burned wire within the harness, or something crossing the wire at a junction or in the control.

Until you find it, disconnect it at both ends and run a new temporary wire - the season will be over before you know it.

Thanks for all your help this week ezeke. Got a good ride around the harbor in before I went to work this morning.

Do you know much about ignition switches? I think this may be the root of my problem. I started a new thread about it here

I know that you need to have the right switch. They sell a good match aftermarket one here at Iboats.

The main thing is that the black and yellow wire is only connected at one of the "M" terminals and that the other "M" goes to ground. The OMC/BRP type switches use this to ground the power pack when you turn the key to "off", thus preventing spark. If the switch is not wired this way, it will not work for you.
