lower gear oil leak on omc 400 stringer (pic)

Okay lowered the stern to change oil in the lower end and noticed oil leaking from where the arrow is pointing. After draining the lower end oil I did not notice any more water than usual. ( I change lower end lube every two outing or so) What would cause this? Also prior to doing all of this today I tried to adjust the shift linkage so I would not have to jiggle the shifter to start engine.. I am unable to lower the stern completely on the trailer due to the roller on back of trailer hits stern. It was hard to put into gear. Is this normal when not in fully down position? Also I did not have engine started although when I was turning the key to see if it was in nuetral it did fire up for about 11/2-2 seconds (dry) turned off immediately.

That oil could be coming from the upper drive i do believe, but only way to know for sure is to split the drive and inspect.

it only leaks when outdrive is lowered.

Why are you changing the oil every two outings? Is it already getting water in the gearcase?

The lower end has a little leak I guess, no visible one though.(at least not before this happened)I was told by the boat shop I could buy some time by changing the lower gear lube frequently because when I bought the boat and took it in for service they found water in the lower end lube so I play it safe by changing it often since lube is so cheap. But like I said when I change it there is not very much water (it is very minimal).

Any body else ever had this problem? And the shifter question?

It's hard to shift because the gears aren't turning with the engine off.
