Hi to all, Great forum.

I have a 1996 Johnson 60 HP OB (Model J60TLDER). I recently rebuilt the carbs, drained the gas tank and put in new plugs (Autolite 275) though I dont think they are the correct plugs. Boat runs pretty good but not ideal. Does anyone know the recomended plug for this engine. I think it is a Champion QL78YC. Multiple manufacturers would be good since not all are carried at my local parts dealer.

Also, what is the setting for the mixture screw on the carbs. They were at 2.5 turns out from seated when I removed them, but the engine smokes badly at this setting when I put the carbs back on. Engine does pretty well at around 1.75 (good idle and run up to about 5300 rpm).

Thanks

mjs,

Get Champions in that engine. Use them exclusively. Don't ask me why, but there is a difference. Gap them at .040".

Your carb adjustments are to personal experience/need.

That engine can be made to idle-nicely- with some tweaking.

Adjust the carbs with the engine in gear, at idle, in the water. You'll get it. About 1 and 1/2--- out, is a place to start.

The engine should be capable of 5500 RPM-MINIMUM.

At 5300, you are lugging it. That engine does not like that and you will kill it. Prop it to run 5500 min. and it will live. 6000 is not too high on a light boat with a light load..

Thanks djohns19

Are the Champion QL78YC the correct plug?

I will set the carbs as you suggested.

mjs,

I do not have a plug chart. Someone will come on that does.

By the way.Re-prop it. The engine will thank you.
