Hi all - I have a 1977 55HP Seahorse (Commercial, I was told - what makes it so?) with electric start that now has a busted cowling because the top plate broke off while I was using a liftbar to raise the engine. How can I best track down one that will fit? I understand many cowlings were interchangable - is there a cross reference anywhere? Can't raise this engine myself in a bobbing boat...thanks for any help!

check ishopmarine.com or do a google search for used. ishop will at least give you a part number. I can't remember the name of the internet boat junkyard right now.

If you have a commercial 55hp it with have the V4 gearcase on it and use ~13.5" V4 props, if its a standard it will use 12" props (12.25x15 or 11.75x17 are the common props). If its a standard 55hp most any 76-85 50/55/60hp TWIN cylinder lids should work for you.

Thanks everyone, for the suggestions. Someone showed me how I could bolt the metal plate onto the fiberglass housing using fender washers so now it doesn't look pretty (altho it never did) but it works! I need more advice so I'll start a new thread...
