Is a jump box adequate as a back-up poer source for starting or is a second battery best.

Generally yes. But since we don't have a clue how large a motor you have we can't say for certain. It all depends on the size of the motor and size of the battery in the jump box.

For the money you spend on a quality jump pack you can get a better marine battery. Yes, they do work.

The motor is a 1989 150hp v6. The present cranking battery is 750 cold cranking amps

A jump box will not always work if hooked to a defective or low battery. The jump box sents power to the battery instead of the starter. Sometimes you have to disconnect the main battery before using the jump box.

If you are going to use the jump box for other things besides the boat they are nice to have. If you are going to only use it on the boat, a second battery would be better.
