I was towing my snowmobiles home tonight to get them ready for the year and I noticed that there was smoke in my rear view mirror. Well I got home and I noticed that there was substantial leaking of tranny fluid all over upon unspection under the truck.

1994 351W with a 4 speed tranny (3 and an overdrive) 4WD. I know nothing other than I made it home. Ideas thoughts suggestions. I know nothing about trannys. It seemed to fun fine all the way home, but I did notice what seemed to be some slipage on the tach. Scant info but how bad does this sound? 2500 dollar truck. I don't really want to dump more than a couple of hundred into her to keep her going. Any Ideas?

Be sure to fill it with fluid before you try to move it again. It my have just overheated and blew the fluid out the overflow vent on to of the tranny (hopeful thinking). Most common problem is the front seal let go. Could possibly require a new torque converter, front pump (maybe just a front pump bushing, again hopeful thinking). Its not a small job, being 4WD it t's a pain in the azz.

If it didn't just overheat and blow the oil out, 500 to 800 dollars would be in line, unless it had to have a replacement pump.

[colour=blue]Don't panic (just yet!). Could be something as simple as a rear seal, cooler pipe/hose or selector shaft seal.

Top her up, fully degrease the area, run it up to temp and watch. Don't run it on the road, stationery in the driveway is o/k, warm it up and select all gears to circulate the oil and warm up everything.

Remember being overfilled is just as bad as being underfilled on a tranny.

Front seal on tranny took a dump. $700 beans to fix. I am going to donate her to a charity. I don't need it and I would rather spend the bucks on a different vehicle if I have to have one down the road.

Thanks for the help guys. Bummer for me.

Thats too bad. You could always fix it yourself and spend $20 for a seal and a weekend of labor pulling and installing the tranny. Such a waste for such an easy fix....
