hello prop guys i have a 1990 220 da iam currently running a ss 17 pitch prop ant 4200 rpm i can get 29 miles per gps .

the boat is in the water from early april saltwater, so i know i have a lot of barnacle down there because it stayin in the water, al the time.

at the start of the season i was not using a gps so i would not know what the speed was .

my issue is even when i trimm all the way up on wot is seems iam plowing too much,

is there a special prop i can use to help keep the bow a little higher on wot speed???

my 17 pitch ss is taking me to 4600 rpm wot with a normal load so i know the pitch is good.

any help will be great thanks guys.

i know how the trim tabs work and how to trim up the drive but .

so i know its not my operating skill causing the plowing

engine is a merc 5.7 260 alphaone drive.

Re: 1990 searay 220 plowing on wot

You have the classic Sea Ray deep V hull with lifting strakes?

If so, they run in a lot of water unless you get them up and going and 29 isn't going to get her up and going. That boat ought to run 40-45 mph with that engine and at that speed you have lifted a lot of hull out of the water.

Being a very deep V and having a lot of hull in the water will/should give you the perception of plowing as your "rudder" runs the full length of the boat.

I think you need to clean up your hull and reevaluate then talk about props.

Re: 1990 searay 220 plowing on wot

40 t0 45 miles per??? dang come on guys help me on this i need to have that kind of speed, lol

my engine is very strong 150 compression on all cilinders.

outdrive is very strong with a 1.47 gear ratio. .

but iam sure even tho i never has a gps on the start of the season i was not running close to at least 35 miles per,

and i think i might started out with some wrong props too , i was later told they was out board props.

those prop does has the 15 splines but with the spacers on they never fit close to the lower unit , there was always a gap in between.

the 17 i have on now does fit perfect, so right now i have a 21 pitch rapture ss prop 15 spline for a outboard very nice no dings or nicks. if anyone instrested in it can email me at bolo789@yahoo.com i have no use for it, low price sale or trade me something that will fit my io mercruiser.

i dont want to pull the boat right guys because it s almost hauling time and these guys charge 400 buck lhaul and launch.
any more info on prop, i know my i know i can go up to a 18 or 19 because when i reach 4600 i still has more room on the shifter foe a little more rpm i just dont do it.

thanks

ok after doing a lot of reading on the prop pages,

i have come to made up my mind what i realy want here.

what brand prop is the best to get in say 19 or 17 pitch for bow lifting on when on plane.???

mercruiser alpha one. for bow lifting on high speed,

right now i gets on plane in a bling. with what i have.

thanks

Re: 1990 searay 220 plowing on wot

I used to pal with a guy that had an 18' with a platry 165 6 cyl and he could run 45 all day any day; could ski you and a buddy at 40 on slaloms to boot.

If you want that hull to perform, you need to get it on top; course when the weather gets bad, you can't beat it for your 29 mph soft ride back home. d:)

Re: 1990 searay 220 plowing on wot

Well chit i sure wish i had a working tach so i could be a little spefic, i do know this putting a Stilletto bay pro ll 4 blade 20p stainless blade on it ( it had a new factory 3bl 19p alum) took it from a fast 50mph and a somewhat bumpy ride at 40 crusing (2' swell's) to 55 mph @ wot and lifting the boat so high it did a little chine walking and just purred @ 40. (215 efi 4.3 v6 1.66 volvo outdrive 2800 lbs boat 20 degree v 8')

Soon the tach will be back from faria and @ that time i will invest in gps, i have some suspision that i am doing a little better than 55. Now that 351 should just rock that boat ......... If it is anything like this welcraft a 17p is way underpropped..........and looking back it actually hurt the boat's handling preformance in almost all speeds.

I'll go along with Mark here - you need to get the hull cleaned first, before anything else.

Do you run in saltwater and do you have bottom paint?

Re: 1990 searay 220 plowing on wot

Bolo with the set up you describe and the prop you say you are running by my calculations you should be at 40mph+ something sounds wrong here and I really think it is more than a prop issue. You state in your first post that your ss17 pitch is taking you to 4200 rpm, and later in the post you say the same prop is taking you to 4600rpm? 400 rpm is a good difference, I think you need to pull that boat and clean and repaint it to get a good foundation to start from. I have seen boats pick up barnicles and funk and put there boat into a nose dive over a season, I am just wondering just wow bad it is under there LOL? Just me personaly I would not take the gamble of a quick fix, by repropping until you know you are on a level playing field and that your spec sheet reflects what you are truely running (If that make sence)
Just my 2 cents.

ok iam a good listenier are these searay 220 realy sopose to give 40+ miles per.

well i say one guy in the searay forum getting 41 at wot .using a 17 pitch.

well thanks guy for all the info i ges i will close this topic next season i will be back.

tommy thanks you and all the guys who help me so far with my project.

i can still cruise to the rockaway/sandyhook reef at 26/27 miles per right now base on water condition.

thats not too bad with a dirty hull.

again thanks any in need of the above outboard prop can pay shipping and give me 50 bucks.

Re: 1990 searay 220 plowing on wot

i found it in a safe in my boat when first got it.

no manual with it just the spacer and lock washer and the rubber housing. no manual , the one thats on the prop right now look kinda bad, with a little crack.

but if no one have an idea i will soon figure it out.

thanks
