First of all, I would like to whole heartedly thank everyone for their prayers and keeping their finger's and other body part's crossed, during my wife's time of need.
My wife was released from the hospital this morning, after undergoing the Thyroid surgery yesterday. She was under the knife for a little over 3 hours. The surgeon said it took a little longer, as there was a lot scar tissue he had to remove from the last surgery, two years ago.
Everything went well until they did a blood sugar test on her. She is a borderline diabetic, which she control's thru her diet and does not take insulin. When I went to her room after the surgery, she told me about the above. I asked how high was her reading on the glucouse meter. She said it was over 200, to which she said please check it a gain. a couple of minutes later the test showed 300, she tode them to test it one more time, which was done. The last test showed a reading of 400!!! My wife was then given a shot of inuslin, which brought the reading down, but not to normal. The RN came in while I was there and said time for another blood sugar test.
I looked up at her IV bag, which was almost empty, then checked the flow rate of the IV. I turned the IV bag around to get a better look as to the printing on the bag. I then said to the nurse, "What in the hell are they doing giving a diabetic a 5% glucose drip?" I asked the nurse if she was supose to be on saline and not glucose. She immediaetly removed the glucose bag, went to the sink and drained out the last ounce or two of the liter bag, folded the bag over a couple times and left the room with the suspect bag. She returned a few minute's later with a fresh bag of the proper soulltion.
Fortunatly there was no damage to my wife's system.
The hospital is doing an internal investigation to determine how and why my wife was given the wrong IV solution, when her chart say's,"do not use a glucose solution."
When we arrived home, she became mad as h*ll, as being the baseball fanatic she is, the Giant's game was not televised today. Fortunatly her baseball freak lady friend arrived a few minunte's later to visit, allowing me to excape to the garage, where I spent most of the afternoon.
Anyway, she is doing fairly well, but it mean's I wil have to be "Mr. Mom" again as well as "Chef Bobardee", for a week or so.
Again, thank you all for the great support.
