5.7 Ignition system question

Hello:

I have a 5.7 Merc Alpha I. Serial 0C664556. Located behind the distrubtor on the block is some sort of square electical part that has a harness going to it. I think water is leaking into it and causing my engine to not start while on the water. Any idea what this is? I think it is a IGN. MODULE. Is this correct? If so how hard is it to replace the wiring harness? has anyone had any problems like this in the past? How hard would it be to relocate it? The manual does not address this part. Thanks in advance.

Re: 5.7 Ignition system question

Those engines came with 2 styles, some with the module mounted on the distributor (Like yours) and some mounted on the exhaust elbow.
If you go to Mercs parts express at http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/PartsExpress/HomePage/homepage.asp then to Parts for Merc Marine products, type in your serial number etc. look in the breakdown for "Electrical Components" there are 2 one for module on the dist. one for on the elbow.
All you need is the bracket and spacers, module, and harness.
Usually the harness and module both have corroded terminals and not repairable. It's not a difficult changeover at all, just expensive.

Thanks don, already been there. The picture doesnt show where that part goes though. Is that the Ignition Module or the ICM Module or the Knock sensor?

Re: 5.7 Ignition system question

It's an ignition module, and it goes on the port exhaust elbow.
