I have an old Johnson
The tag on it says :
Model FDL-20c
SN J2681258 (8 may be a 6)

Can anyone tell me about this? Also, are there any diagrams available for these?
Thanks

Re: Engine ID help

Just wondering what the shaft connects to where is slids up to the motor. There seems to be something missing on my motor

Re: Engine ID help

The splined end of the drive shaft slides into a matching female splined hole in the end of the crankshaft. Is that what you are referring to? There's nothing to be missing there. If the crank doesn't turn the driveshaft, the splines are probably rusted out of the crankshaft. This is the result of somebody leaving out the o-ring that is supposed to be in the groove in the upper end of the driveshaft. The o-ring is there to keep water out of the splines (and a smear of grease in).

The o-ring is there but no spines that I can see and there is no rust on the shaft, Is there any pictures available?

Re: Engine ID help

If the lower gearcase bolts up to the intermediate housing, but the driveshaft does not seem to engage with the crankshaft, then either the gearcase isn't shifting into gear, or perhaps someone put a short shaft gearcase onto a long shaft motor?? I have seen a lot of crusty old outboards, but I have never seen the splines completely go away!

Sure it isn't broken off? You should be able to tell. And get a good light and look up there and see if where the shaft would go if its an empty hole, or a broken piece stuck up there..
