SAE 30 weight

Mainly model years with some minor upgrades. Its like comparing a different year cars. There was no major changes until to DP.

3RD COMPARING THE AQ260 VOLVO ENGINE AGAINST THE 305 COMMANDER BY FORD IS ONE STRONGER THAN THE OTHER?

All depends on how they were built. I would think the 305 though. Volvo has always made their stuff real tame.

The 280 OEM man say 10/30W or 20/40W oil
Volvos always have more posted HP than same
setup in Merc.
280 is the newer 270, some say 280's are bullet proof

I thought we went through this before. It must have been awhile. I think the consensus was that the 10W's had additives in them that was not good for outdrives. I may be wrong. Where is LubeDude (or whatever he goes by now) when you need him?
Also I would say my 35 year old 270 with 330hp running thought it is just as bullet proof.

Re: OIL FOR 280 VOLVO PENTA OUTDRIVE

Volvo came out with a service bulletin in 2000 that stated "Same as engine oil"
Note, this is assuming you are using oil in your engine that Volvo recommends.
In our quick reference books, they give a number for 30W gear lube, which is nothing more than a straight weight motor oil (30W) labled as gear lube for those that must have gear lube for their drive.

30 weight in mine, and just dropped from 40wt per Dons expert advise. 10/30 is useless in my opinion, as it does not get hot (hell, mine runs in 40-50 degree water) so really you are running 10 weight, with unused Polymers waiting for the oil to hit 200+ degrees and kick in, which aint gonna happen.
PS. Yep, bulletproof.....only outdrive I would own. 30 years old, and shifts like...well, ya can't FEEL it shift! Just goes forward........ d:)

If my scanner was working I would
post the page that says
10/30 W or 20/40W.
Now this is from when they first came out..............
Same as engine oil, per DonS......................
Do you run straight 30W in your block?
I have run 10/30W for 26 years and know what
NO Problems.............

Well, I have the same info in my ancient Owners Manual too. Things change. Oil gets better. There was not much choice years ago, and sure you can run engine oil too. BUT, these are gears shearing the oil, and gears don't need detergents, added polymers designed for hot running engines, etc. Old gear oils with massive amounts of sulphur ran hundred thousand miles in cars with no problem. Its been replaced with the engineering of synthetics. 10wt (thats the base stock of all 10-30's-40's) is just that . Too light. Gear oils were 80-90wt. Cars/trucks would still be using old 80-90wt if it weren't for the sulphur issue, and friction, which they needed to reduce for meeting CAFE standards.
Your questions answered...
"says10/30 W or 20/40W"
When was the last time you saw 20-40w sitting on a shelf for sale?
"Same as engine oil, per DonS"
Believe Don was quoting from the old Manual too, but as he works on this stuff daily, I think he prefers 40wt in the motor
"Do you run straight 30W in your block?"
Nope, straight 40wt....
"I have run 10/30W for 26 years and know what NO Problems.."
Now you know why we call them bulletproff.....

Your funny Scaatty
I love that volvo don't know **** about their stuff.
Gear oil is new invetion huh.
I love guys that re engineer for the original makers.
What part of the man says use this oil don't you get?
You should right them a letter and point out the error of their ways.
You can use aeroshell in there if you want, when someone asks what goes in there, give them the man
original specs.
Laughing at your wise azz ways :^

I'd tell ya where to go, but the lines too long.....

PS. A lot of people use Diesel oil in there gas motors too, but I don't want you to get your panties twisted up any tighter than they are now, so I'll be on my way. Have fun cranking your Model T, and do it by the manual.

Oh yeah, one more thing. .A gear case in water is a gear case in water. Just how many outboard makers say use engine oil in THEIR lowers? What about Merc drives? What about OMC's? Why am I bothering with you.......ta-ta.

Just figured I would poke you in the ribs a little.

Oh...and I always used 30W in my 270 when I had it.

And you have never seen an oil argument until you get on a Harley forum.

I don't even bother with Harley Forums anymore. New idiots don't know a light bulb from a sprocket. 46 years in the saddle (just did a 7000/26 day trip), 6 bikes, 3 HD (one homemade 72 Sporty Dragbike that I did by hand, now screaming idiots do it on TV bolting stuff made by skilled people that get no credit, and they make millions..insane)....anyway...also 4 boats, probably 20 outboards (50 years wrenching boats for fun (AND cause they break a lot!), so when it comes to oil, its whats on sale in the biggest container I can get. Retired and want to stay that way. 160,000 thou on the 4.3 Astro Van, cheapest 10-40 oil in every 6 months (only do about 3000 a year with it now), and it burns zero oil, with zero problems. I also have NEVER had an oil related problem in my life, and I have had quite a few toys over the years. Peace........ 8)
