I recently bought an 18hp Evinrude, it's an anniversary model circa 1960's and it has not been run for about 15 years. It has the old style gas tank ie air and gas line. What should I do before turning it over?

If it has the twin hose tank it is from the 50s, not the 60s, and will use a 24:1 mix.

Tell us the model number.

Post the model number and we'll date it for you. With most of those you can buy a replacement fuel pump for about $50, refit it for a modern tank and get rid of that goosey old pressure tank.

Motor sat for years

Start simple squirt some TC-3 outboard oil in cylinders enough to loosen up the pistons and then do a Compression test. There after go to rebuilding carbs, new plugs. Install a new water pump and change lower unit gear oil and check propeller. Also go with Senior Chief Petty Officers advice on a fuel pump. After initial checks, start it up and do a idle and short rev's. Let engine run for a few minutes. Good Luck!

i disagree on the fuel pump keep it original. i've seen lots of people screw up a good engine trying to convert them. parts are available at "laingsoutboards.com"

do not try to start this engine without the lower unit being submerged in water. a test tank, mounted on a substancial stand use a large garbage can. check the lower unit for water intrusion, and change the gear lube. in the engine faq forum is a thread by Joe Reeves for adjusting the carbs. get it close in the test tank, then fine tune on a boat. mine starts on the second pull, and will idle all day, after using Joes post.

I disagree with leaving the pressure fuel system in place. Simply too faulty and prone to failure, at the least opportune time. Just my dos centavos.

On that year of engine, and sitting that long, the ignition coil's will be aged cracked, and the point's oxidized. The carb will also need cleaning, and a kit installed. Get the engine running first to see what you have, then deal with the other parts. Those can be excellent running engine's if in sound condition.
