Boat Info:
Length =18 ft
Useage =Cruising
Top Speed =38 MPH
WOT rpm =5500
Current Pitch =17

I run a factory 15x17 3 blade aluminum OMC prop (391200) on my 2007 115 E-Tec. Performance is very acceptable overall, but I'd sacrifice some top end for enhanced slow speed manuvering and a better bite in reverse. I see there is a 4 blade Vortech @ 15X16; would this be worth a try? Or any other suggestions? Composite maybe?

Re: Slow Speed Control

I have had good luck with Merc High 5. I am currently going to try a Merc Alpha4 4 bld. aluminum because I want the characteristics you desire, and more bite in bad weather. In my experience, added blades give the results you wish, with some sacrifice of top speed. Vortech 4 bld should show improvement and be a good prop for cruising. If I had a smaller engine and wanted to maximize it's potential, I would opt for SS, then you get the benefit of extra bite from SS and from the added blade(s).

What kind of hull is it? Is the motor set at a fairly high X dimension?

Don't know what an x dimension is, but here's a pic. She's a relatively heavy, moderately powered boat.

Good pic / info. I'd guess that just about any ss prop you try will be better than that prop. That boat will need a prop with some bow lift, it doesn't need stern lift at all. Something like the Stiletto. Even though it's a 14 1/4" diameter it'll bite harder than that prop.

Re: Slow Speed Control

I guess the pic is a little confusing...
The prop in the pic is a Hustler and is NOT the one I am refering to; it was only handy when the motor was put on. The prop I'm using is a 15 X 17 OMC 391200 3 blade aluminum. It is much better for slow speed control and backing than the Hustler.

The prop I'm considering is the 4 blade Vortex @ 15X16:

Would this prop give me more slow speed control and better backing, or just less top end?
