Is there any recommended location for a battery switch (1/2/off/both)? Should it be out where it is accessable or in a more protected location under the engine cover? Or under a rear seat ? What about water splash protection?

where it isn't going to get spashed and as near to the batteries as possible. You do want it also to be easily accessable.

An ideal electrical location is near the battery. An ideal convenient location is under the dash within reach near the steering wheel. That is where I have mine. I can switch between batteries while remain seated at the wheel. Of course I upgraded my cable to compensate for the distance. 8)

I don't know if easy access is as important as proximity to the batteries. At most you switch the thing when starting up/shutting down for the day (or the weekend), or possibly midway through a trip to split the load. Having the thing behind a hatch isn't a big deal. Cable diameter goes up seriously if there is a long way to the switch, and it's a lot easier to maintain and diagnose any problems with the setup if everything is in one place.

I do agree that having it outside is not a great idea.
