Pony what's your beef?

How do they affect you anyway?

They bring more tax revenue into the area, something you locals should appreciate down the road.

As far as "minimum wage" at Walmart that's a bunch of trumped up BS. They average around $10/hour here. Somebody is parroting the union and Dem talking points.

It is a very complex problem. I am no fan of Walmart, but I am a fan of free markets. People have to quit shopping small local stores for Walmart to drive these stores out of business.

Having said that I also believe communities allow Walmart and major chain stores an unfair advantage thru tax abatement and free roads, sewer, water, etc.
The local governments look at increasing sales tax revenues, and the number of jobs created. They forget to look at the big picture and harm done to the community.

Walmart is cheaper on some items but not all the time. Name brand boat oil is cheaper at the marina than Walmart here. In the same way, Home Depot is not the best or cheapest place to buy building materials.

Even if I have to pay more for items, I try to shop small town stores.

That is well said and I completely agree. I can remember when I was a kid in Memphis and the first Wal-Marts were opening up. Most people don't remember that originally Wal-Mart would not stock or sell anything that was not Made in the USA. That was a big part of their early marketing. Every one of their trucks had "Proudly made in the USA" on it. After Sam Walton died, things really changed...

I'll be quite honest Kagee.......
1) It brings people in from Milwukee. Workers and shoppers alike. Not good people either.
2) They destroyed a huge marsh area to build the building
3) The Price of things we see goes up. I am talking cost from the Vendor, because of contracts they sign with Walmart, in FEAR of losing their business too.
4) AND IT DIRECTLY EFFECTS ME. My Best Buy is predicting a 5-7% drop in sales, which means a drop in NOP, a drop in Rev, and a drop in my bonus.

I can tell you from expirience in Big Block retail, YOU WILL NOT find $10 and hour avg. Not at Walmart especially. I know people who have worked there and I know how it works.

When Walmart stops destroying American business I will stop disliking them so much. If you dont see where that comes from try American seafood vendors. They simply couldn'g give Walmart the price they asked, so Walmart goes over Seas.

Walmart products........the cheap stuff that everyone raves about the pirce on is 90% of the time pure garbage. Electronics mainly.

Tommays, you're gonna need to explain that one to me. All retailers play THE game, all of them. I am sorry that you can't see Wal-mart plays it differently

The $10 rate comes from a survey a while back. While some start out at a lower rate, they work up if they are good. Around here that's what the end up paying to be competitive. Nobody is making $5 and change around here unless they are a part time high school student in a small private business.

As for Best Buy.... we just had a Super Walmart open up here.... first one in the area... Best Buy just moved one of their stores right behind it.

Best Buy was also sued by the states Attorney General a while back for their rebate scams. Like Tom said, they got their issues. Pot meet Ketttle!

Now, If they put a Bass pro shops or cabelas in place of the walmart we'd be good. I'd have a BPS and a Target. The combo has everything a walmart has + better service. Luckily we are getting a cabelas 20 mins from here. The nearest BPS is 1 hour away.

I don't care bout all the crap and political reasons for not shopping at wally world.. I just don't care for the place....... Stores tend to be filthy dirty and un-organized (usually trashed by the shoppers), and the stores are packed with people 24/7....

So i'll stick with Sears, and Target.... They are clean, well organized, not as crowded, and the folks who work there seem like they actually give a damn...8)........

ps... to all you single dudes, like mee... The tallent is waaaaay better at Target... d:)

Won't do Target either, no Toys for tots sponsered by the Marines.
I do care about the crap and political reasons of these stores and I refuse to support them. My choice.

Lube yes you are right Minimum wage jobs have a place. But what happens is Wally starts hurting the businesses that provided living wage jobs, in turn they either layoff or close one by one. The next thing you know the wage earners are now looking at these MW jobs because it is all there is. That leaves that money they used to spend in other businesses around town scratching their heads trying to figure out what happend (When they already know) No money for them either so layoffs or close.

It is a visious cycle. The only ones that win are the the Corporate honchos in AK.

Thats my rant and I am sticking to it!

What is your definition of "a living wage"?

As a contractor, if I want to bid on a State or Federal project, I have to pay a "living wage", and they tell me what it is for each job bracket. Last time I looked it was $25.00 per hr. general labor and $30.00 for semi-skilled labor (less than journeyman)... licenced trades go up from there.

So how many of these "living wage" jobs does Walmart kill off? Far as I can see, the only thing Walmart does is bring cheap products to the non-discriminating buyer.

If a small businesses selling the same thing goes belly up because they can’t compete?... that's a market driven economy, and that's what this country is all about.

That's my rant and I'm sticking to it 8)

Few small businesses pay more than Walmart for that type worker and few have benefits as good as Walmart. The point that few should expect to support a family on what these unskilled jobs pay is a valid one. We are essentially talking about people without a trade or advanced schooling or have retired from something else. Some even appear to be overpaid.
