Just got my first boat, 1989 Arriva 20' w/ 150HP Force Outboard. Engine was rebuilt about a year ago, but the owner said the power trim is out. I checked it out briefly last night, the whole assembly is there, just not working apparently. Any suggestions on how I could test it to figure out what specific part is out? I'd rather not replace the whole assembly if I don't have to. Thanks.

Start with checking the motor first. There are two wires going into it. When one is powered the other becomes negative. So to test is simple... make sure you disconnect the two wires from relays and ground one and apply power to other... if it works and the engine goes up and down then your problem lies in the electrical system... if it works and the engine don't move then it lies in the hydralic system after it. If it don't work then it is simply the motor. Hope this helps... if you need help after you figure out what component it is then post back...

Re: Newb here, 150HP Force Outboard question

Thanks for the response. I fiddled a bit last night by pressing the buttons on the throttle. They made something click in the back, leading me to believe that it's either the hydraulic system or the motor. There's fluid back there, so it's probably a seal or the pistons or something. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the previous owner didn't also burn out the motor trying to get it to work. Is there any way to test just the motor to see if it's functional? Can I somehow disconnect it from the rest of the assembly? I haven't had time this week to play, but this weekend that's all I'm going to do.

No need to take motor off to test... just follow these instructions as in my earlier post:
