LOST OIL PRESSURE

I have an OMC 460 King Cobra on my 28' Bayliner. When I was changing props to see which was best for my boat and doing test runs, I got the engine up to 4300-4500 RPM, After testing 3 different prop changes, I noticed that my oil pressure gauge read "0". I stoped the engine right a way, and got a tow back in to prevent any damage to the engine. There was no engine knock, or white smoke, and the tempreture was fine. My guess is I think it might be an oil pump problem. Does anyone have anyother thoughts? Thanks

Re: LOST OIL PRESSURE

Are you sure it is not a problem with the gauge or sender or wiring?
Did you see any rise in temp?.....JK

Re: LOST OIL PRESSURE

check it with a manual gauge, if you still do not have pressure pull the distibutor and see if the pump shaft has rung off

Re: LOST OIL PRESSURE

JK The guage seems to be ok. I ran the boat all week (being on vacation) and didn't go over 3000 rpm because the engine is remanufactured and gave it a 20 hour break in period. At 3000 rpm the gauge read about 40 psi and at idle it read abit lower. And like I said, there was no problem with the gauge until I opened her up. I wanted to change the prop because at 3000 RPM the boat wasn't moving like it should. And the temp was fine. I understand that it "could" be a faulty gauge or sending unit, But I can't take that chance until I find out the cause. And Xtraham How do I use a manual gauge?

Re: LOST OIL PRESSURE

remove the oil pressure sendor and install a manual gauge they are very reanonable at any auto parts store, if the engine was just remaned/installed check that the sendor wire did not viberate off the sendor at the engine

Re: LOST OIL PRESSURE

I think xtra meant a Mechanical gauge, not a manual gauge.
The mechanical gage just uses a hose or tubing to connect it to the engine, no electrical sender or wiring to deal with. Great for testing things, but not great for long runs to the helms on boats.

Re: LOST OIL PRESSURE

if you actually had 0 oil pressure the hydraulic lifters would have sounded like a wahing machine at idle. buy a cheap mechanical guage and install it and crank it up, after making sure you have oil in the engine.

Re: LOST OIL PRESSURE

We tried the mech gauge, and there is no oil pressure. So the engine is coming back out, and going back to the manufacturer. They are going over the entire engine, but they think the problem is in the oil pump with some "Spring" like part that is that is sticking open creating the problem with the drop in pressure. They said it is very rare that that happens but but they think thats what it is. I really didnt understand since I was doing three other things at the same time when they called. Has anyone heard of this problem?

Oil bypass, not sure about Ford but a GM is in the block, not in the oil pump.
