I have both the service manual and the owner’s manual for my 1966 20hp Johnson and neither has a decent picture of the cowl. Mine had old tape glue which I took off with acetone. It also took off the decals.

The cowl is missing a part that surrounds the pull cord and I don’t know what it looks like. The motor is in good working condition and without this part I can’t seal the unit from water. I would dearly love to find a source of good pictures of this motor.

Thanks, Jim

I have looked there. Here is the weird thing, even for that page. Everything above the 20 has a hinge plate. Everything below has a diagonal cowl. The 20 has a single lift-off cowl with an exposed hand grip. There is a piece below that. It must be removable or you couldn’t lift off the cowl. But there is no place for a full hinge. That cowl is different from everything else that year.

Paul Moir knows those older motors inside and out. If you get no response, you may want to hail him directly or send him a PM...

BRP's website has parts books on-line for 1968-up. I believe the '68 has the same cowl as your '66? You must be talking about the rubber bellows and plate assembly that goes on the nose of the recoil starter. See "http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E" I don't think the link works. You might have to copy and paste the string into your browser address box without the quotation marks.

The BRP site parts diagram for the '68 "Johnson" looks like it's really for a '68 Evinrude.
The '66-'67-'68 Johnson 20HP has a metal soap-dish like thing that fits on the "snout" of the recoil. The Johnson shroud has a rubber trim around the hole for the recoil handle, and the soap-dish thing fits snug against it from the inside. It's pressed up against it by a spring on the recoil "snout".

Jim,

This is my 1969 25 hp. I have these pictures of the cowl and I think it is still similar to yours. It is all factory original and since your decals are gone, this is what they look like for 1969. For 1969 there was the 20 hp. and 25 hp. motor.

All - thanks for the input. I can't get into the BRP site from work so will check tonite.

River-Runner I can't see the pictures.

I really appreciate the input.

So do the pictures just appear or do I have to open up a file. Maybe the office internet cops are preventing me from seeing them.

Logged on around the network. The office cops must block pictures. I know they block sports and anything that has the word fish in the address label.

The pics and parts drawing are great.

River-Runner, so is your motor. So how do you remove the cowl. From the parts drawing it looks like you have to remove the pull cord handle. But that can’t be right. Is there some kind of quick disconnect.

I wonder if I can still order the whole assembly.

Thanks for the info and help.

Re: 1966 20 hp Johnson

Jim,

The hood has one simple hood install and release lever. It's in the back, down under the bottom of the motor pan. It's a hinged claw that grabs a protruding pin on a metal casting that's riveted on the inside of the hood. Pulling down on the lever releases the hood to just lift off. Pushing up installs the hood. The claw grabs the pin and pulls the hood down and locks it in place.

There is also a metal hook on the front of the hood that hooks on the front lip of the motor pan.

The opening in front of the hood for the rope start is filled with the rope handle and a plastic insert with rubber behind, which all stays with the motor.

Got it. That is what the spring is for. It keeps the plastic plate and handle in place when the hood is in place. There must also be a rubber gasket for a seal.

I re-looked at mine last nite and it is slightly different. There are 4 holes drilled around the outside but otherwise the same (some previous owner may have drilled the holes). From what you have given me I think I can fabricate something to keep the weather out.

I really appreciate your help.

River Runner, that is one beautiful motor!

jimh6278, be aware that your '66 cowl is slightly different and will only accept the metal "soap dish" and it's bracket/pad. You could fabricate a bracket/pad easily enough. The "soap dish" could be tricky.

Re: 1966 20 hp Johnson

Jim,

Do what you can to get the motor together and it doesn't need to be fancy. Because it is a great motor! With lots of power for the weight (78 lbs). I bought my motor new and try to use it a lot. The motor will out last me.

I did make a mistake when I bought this one motor. I should have bought two of them on the same day. But I was 19 years old and $500.00 was a lot of dollars, and never thought I should have then. So for many years now, I have been taking my time looking for a same motor to run twins on my 1968 14' aluminum boat that I bought new, and or would use one for another boat. That's why I will view posts like yours first.

I do see more 20 hp. than the 25 hp. motors, but maybe some day soon.

Enjoy that motor and use it a lot !
