Just joined the forums. Bought a '89 Arriva w 150 HP Force outboard. There's not an Arriva forum, but from what I gather, they are pretty similar to Bayliner, correct? I'm new at this, so please let me know if I'm wrong.

The boat's in decent shape, needs some cosmetic work and a new trim, but other than that it's great. Any tips/suggestions/known problems?

Go though that motor and perform all the maintenance that the last owner(s) didn't do.

Change gear lube.
Change water pump.
CLean fuel tank.
Replace fuel filter.
Replace fuel lines and primer bulb.
Rebuild the fuel pump.
Check compression.
Clean the fuel recirculation system.
Grease all fittings.
Grease the prop shaft.
Rebuild and sync the carbs.
DECARB the motor.
Then replace the spark plugs.

How's that?
Ought to keep you busy for a few days. :D

Roscoe, you miss the most important thing, buy and engine specific manual.

Thanks for the input. I'll definitely check through all those things.

Here's another problem:

I know the trim is out. The whole assembly is there, and there's power getting to it, cause when I press the buttons on the throttle, I can hear something clicking in the back of the boat.

There's fluid on and around it, dripping down. My guess is that the pistons are out (or a leak or something) and that the previous owner probably also burnt the motor out trying to get it to work. Is that possible? What's a good way to test it out. i don't wanna replace the whole freaking assembly if it's just that motor out, you know? Any help is greatly appreciated.

disconnect the hoses from the rams and see if there's any response without any resistance.

Re: New to the forums, looking for some tips....

The clicking you hear is the relay that sends power to the trim pump.

There are 2 relays.
1 for raising the engine, 1 for lowering it.
If you hear a click when you push the button for up, and when you push it for down, the relays are working.

If you only hear a click for one of the directions, one of the relays is bad. Replace it for about $12.

To test the trim motor:
Disconnect the trim motor wires from the connectors.
There should be 2 wires, one green, one blue.

Touch these wires directly to the battery terminals (or you can use jumper cables).
You should hear the trim motor run.

Switch the 2 wires around on the battery terminals, and the trim motor should run in the opposite direction.

If the trim motor runs in both directions, but the engine does not lift, then:

The pump is bad, or the valve assembly is bad.

It the motor raises, but does not stay up, the check valves or the o-rings in the cylinder are bad.
