Okay, as I near my BD I purchased a gift for myself. I had been using a Garmin 12 for about 10-11 years and still works like a champ. I upgraded to a Garmin 76C and now I have memory space (115MB).

GRRRRRRrrrrrrrr it will not accept my Maptech Terrain Navigator maps. :(

I am slighly confused about Garmin Mapsource maps. I use my GPS in the woods and mountains.

Garmin offers a TOPO version and a National Park Version. I want the maximum detail but, the National Parks Version will not cover all the areas that I travel.... I am limited to the Topo version only.

Anyone using this software?
Opinions? Experiances?

Thanks!

Re: Garmin Mapsource Topo help

I use the garmin topo maps. Very good in my opinion. They also show roads, tracks, and power lines. Show depth contours and submerged obstacles in the bays where I boat as well. I use the maps for finding PL'd helicopters at work as well. The topo maps have excellent road details showing county roads and dirt roads that were around when the map software was developed. I think you would be happy with the detail.

Re: Garmin Mapsource Topo help

I got the topo and they are 1:100000 which are okay but I am addicted to 1:24000 for the detail. I also use maptech but thay are not capable for being loaded into the 76C.

Yea, I understand . We cant always get we want just have to take what we can get sometimes. I wish my handheld could get an instant XM sat weather radar overlay downloaded in real time....but that probably wont happen for handhelds for some time into the future...but it sure would be nice!

I would think that a web enabled cell phone would be able to access Noaa.gov weather site. I do carry a radio capable of weather channels but that is always annoying to listen to.

Re: Garmin Mapsource Topo help

I have a weather radio myself...very annoying as you say. A lot of the newer gps units that are vehicle mounted are capable of XM weather radar being downloaded in real time and overlayed onto the gps display. These are common for boats and aircraft. With a subscription of course. But nice all the same. Wish my handheld was capable of that. So you can see where you are on the map and where the storm is at the same time all in relation to each other in real time. Very nice.
