I bought a 1986 Bayliner Trophy Pro Bass Boat with a Force 125hp motor. It ran like a dream for 8 trips out then last weekend, it wouldn't spark. At first, we couldn't get it to do anything - battery was totally dead - wouldn't take a charge so we bought a new battery. Still wouldn't spark. I took it to a local dealer and he's telling me that BOTH of my power - charger packs (I think that's what they're called) have gone out and that I need to have them both replaced. I'm in shock. $1500 worth of repairs. Other dealers I've talked to say that it's HIGHLY unusual for BOTH to go out at the same time. Is this something I could fix? Is this something you guys have heard of? I'm a chick and NOT mechanically inclined - I don't want to be taken advantage of by some ruthless mechanic. HELP!o:)

If indeed the power packs are bad, yes it is unusual for both to go out at once.

You can get the power packs for about $270 each from Maxrules. com, and it takes 2 hours to install them and test them.

In general, you have a stator which generates electricity and sends it to the power packs.

You have a trigger, which tells the power packs when to send the electricity to the spark plugs.

So, if both power packs are not working:
1- they could have failed simultaneously.
2- The trigger may have failed, so the power packs will not fire.
3- The stator has failed, so there is no electricity to make it all work.
4- One or more wires may have worn through or broken, causing the ignition to ground out and not work.

I would look for another mechanic.
One you can trust, and one that knows how to test the components before you replace them.

They can all be tested and the failed part can be identified 95% of the time.

You will need to verify the model number and year of your motor.
There is a difference in the ignition system parts from the 1986 "A" model, and the 1986 "B" model.
