I just purchased this boat a few weeks, i am not planning on putting it into the water till next spring. It has a flat red and black paint job. It appears that the paint was shiny when new, however i like the color the way it is. The dealer who i purchased the boat from says that I should definately get the paint job wet sanded then clear coated. He said performance and protection are being comprised by not having a shiny paint job. He doesnt do this in house so he has nothing to gain. Is he correct? Also, can this be done at a local paint shop or should it be done at a marina. What type of clear coat should be used. After I put the clear coat on it, will it need a gell coat. What are the different functions between the two. How long will these last. I live in Boston, does anyone have any recommendations on where to get this down. This boat is absolutely mint. It has a brand new engine and outdrive along with a bunch of others. The only other flaw i can see is that the vinyl is ripped and faded. I also need to find a place near boston that performs that as well.

Thanks

Re: Faded Paint

Welcome to iboats.

Try buffing a small spot with compund and an electric variable speed polisher (an orbital probably will not do it). If you want.... yes an automotive paint shop can handle it and any good quality clear coat should work (it does on corvettes).

Read the boat restoration section and do a search for "faded" Ton's on info can be found in that section with photos of alot of before and after pictures. Your shiney finish may be closer and cheaper than you think.
