Can I Buy water pump for my Merc. 470 inboard @ autopart store

I would like to know if a water pump mounted on motor could be replaced with one from a particular automobile supplier? This is my first time and sure how to use site, so any tips with reply on how to use site will also help. Thanks John.K

Welcome to iboats. My advice would be no - the marine ones have some extra degree of corrosion protection. Especially if you have a raw-water cooled engine & even more if you use it in salt water. You may see just as many replies later that say OK. There are a lot of knowledgeable guys on this site & everybody has their own opinion & experiences to draw from. I, for one, tend to follow the book

Sorry but that one is Mercrusier only. Its a cam driven waterpump.

Yep, I'm REAL curious why Merc (don't they do enough dumb stuff?) would do something as COMPLICATED as what Trent is saying.
BUT anyway, if your talking the circulation pump on the front of the motor, get a marine one. Has ceramic bearings, and the back plate is stainless steel. An auto pump will rust out in a few years....

That pump is a special pump and is driven off the cam like trent said. Rusting out is not the problem with these pumps since these engines are all FWC.

No wonder you see all the bad write-ups on those 470's around here. Geesh, what a contraption. Glad I have a good ol' GM V8.

Now I know why I like my old GM/Volvo so much...and looks like I have another nameless engineer to add to my (growing daily) list!

That water pump is nothing compared to what they used on older SAAB engines.
