My power trim seems powerless. All I had was down now I only get clicking when I want to put down. It will do nothing when I switch the trim up. I had to let out the relief plug to get it up. Can anyone help me. Any test I can do to see if the motor is shot? The battery has a full charge.

I would unplug and trim motor and check for battery voltage at the connector with the switch in up and in the down position. This will tell you if the problem is in the motor or the wiring and battery.

You can also try to jump power from the battery to the motor directly and see if the motor will work. This will tell you the same thing as above.

Hope this helps

Thanks alot for the reply. There are three wires to the pump motor the black (nuetral) but Im not sure of the other two. Is one up and the other down. So my question is what wires do I put on the battery directly? Thanks

One of the wires runs the pump in the up direction, the other runs the pump in the down direction. The black wire is always ground (the battery negative pole). You should have wires directly from the battery to the trim pump. You can jumper from the red cable on the solenoid to either the blue or green wire and observe movement of the motor.

So I took the wires off and jummped them directly from the battery, cool the motor works but now I lost because whats bad the wires the cellaniod (sorry about the spelling)or something else. now I seem to have a new problem. When I try to start the starter just runs but doesn't crank the engine. Oh boy. By the way this is a great sight with many helpful people. Thanks

Since the starter will not engage completely now too, it sounds like a bad main power connection. I would start by taking the battery cables off at the battery and the engine and cleaning. Make sure they are tight. If that does not work, I would double check by load testing the battery to make sure it is good. If you do not have a tester, most auto parts stores will test them.

After that you have to check the tilt wiring, switches, etc to determine why power is not getting to the pump. A Manual would help alot.

Maybe Chris has a better idea, but that is what I would do.

When the starter gear doesn't engage the flywheel it is usually electrical or caused by dirt or rust on the bendix drive. If you clean up the bendix and oil (not grease) it, and the gear still won't engage, look to your electrical supply, as Mike had suggested.

Yes on cleaning up your connections regarding the starter.

Engine trim issue: Get a manual, and check you trim solenoids (one for up, one for down). If they are original, I would change them anyway beacuse they are cheap ($20 ea. or so) and easy to change yourself.

Well I oiled the bendix drive and that solved the starting problem. Tested the trim up celloniod (I'm a terrible speller) and it was bad. $19 bucks on some parts website. Cool. I did clean all connections also. Thanks for the good advice. IO need to replace the seals in my trim cylinder. Do I need to remove the engine from the boat? I have the kit but not sure how to get the stuff off. By the way I am in the proccess of getting a book. Thanks to all you seasoned verterans.
