Till you are on the full mark on the dip stick.
Not being an azz about it, but depending on how much you take out is how much you put back. Usually between 4 and 5 quarts. DO NOT overfill.

With a filter change, stop at 4 quarts. Run it. Let it sit for a few minutes and then check the dip stick(with boat level) and add if necessary. Mine is full with about 4 liters(almost 4 quarts).

FYI.

If you go to BRP.com and make your way to the Johnson outboard website or go directly to Johnson.com (it's easier to get around in then the Evinrude website) they have links to complete engine diagrams for OMC sterndrives going back to 1968.

There is also a link to Kencook.com where you can purchase non-current literature for OMC sterndrives going back to 1962. The Service manual for your drive is $76.43. I purchased the service manual for my 1989 OMC 2.3L this summer and it has been invaluable. It gives you information on everthing you want to know about your drive. They actually sent me a new looking, original manual and it arrived in 2 or 3 days.
