Hey guys!! This is my first time asking something in this forum. I have read a lot here.

Well the thing is the i just got my first boat ever. It has a 1980 175hp evinrude, but it doesn't have spark on any of the spark plugs. I tried unpluging to wirering harness and cranked it with some jumper cables. It didn't work. I bought a multimeter and tested to see the voltage coming out of the two brown cables coming from the stator and i only get around 90 volts while cranking. Please help me out i dont know what else i can do. I really apreciate any help you guys can give me.

Thanks
Alain.

Re: 1980 175 hp evinrude. No Spark!!

The spark test requires that the spark plugs be removed in order to obtain the highest rpm possible.

The ignition is self contained and the engine must crank over at least 300 rpm in order for the stator to energize the powerpack. That engine has dual powerpacks and it's highly unlikely that both packs have failed.

Rig a spark tester whereas you can set a gap of 7/16" for the spark to jump.

If no spark with the RED electrical plug disconnected, visually check the stator under the flywheel. If any portion of it is cracked and dripping a sticky substance down on the timer base and powerhead, that would indicate that it is failing and would be unable to supply the necessary AC voltage to the powerpack, in which case, replace it.

Let us know what you find.

I tried many other things like taking out all the spark plugs. The engine seems to rev at good speed. I also tried disconecting the rectifier, i dont know if that is any good. I am cranking the engine straight with the starter, meaning that i'm grounding the block and connecting the red jumper to the possitive bolt of the starter. Is this correct? or does electricity have to go through some pace else?

Re: 1980 175 hp evinrude. No Spark!!

Guys i got it!!!!! After hours of searching and testing i found that the problem was with one power pack and three coils (the ones that go to the spark plug). The good power pack was giving electricity to the bad coils, and the bad power pack was giving electricity to the good coils, thus making me believe that it was something else other than the power packs and coils since i hear they dont go bad all at the same time.

I got spark on one side now!!!d:)

Can someone tell me the power pack and the coils i need for a 1980 Evinrude 170 hp and where i can get them cheap, im a student and my budget is a little low. Thanks
