My Six year old BIY (build it yourself) 1.2 ghz Athalon PC is getting long in the tooth, with too much cr@p slowing it down and monitor starting to flicker. I don't even remember the web site I bought the parts from.

The Compaq package deals from Best Buy, etc look good and priced well, but I'm thinking about going cheap on the box and splurge for a 19" flat panel monitor.

Anyone have some good PC parts sites they work with?

Thanks

Crucial is good for memory.

Tigerdirect has alot of parts.

It all depends on what you want to build.

I won't deal anyplace but Newegg... reliable, competitive pricing, quick shipping.

All my stuff is BIY with 90% parts from Newegg.

The only exception is the monitors and hard drives which I bought locally from Best Buy or Office Depot.

Best Buy always has "one of a kind" monitors for less.
Just got an email from DELL, a Sony 19" LCD for $269.
Also, Techbargins.com is a good "deal" finding website.

You get a lot nicer a computer than a name brand if you select your parts wisely. Three suggestions:

1 - Western digital hard drive with 3 year warranty (not the 1 year!). Those are great drives. Nearly silent, nearly never fail.

2 - Good "name brand" power supply. Usually quieter. Enermax, etc.

3 - Good "name brand" cooler with speed control. Quiet. Zalman, etc.

If you're really into quiet check out silentpcreview.com to get ideas about parts. I've built many systems that you can't tell are running unless you check the power lights.

I always deal with a really good local independant PC house. If you have something die you can replace it immediately. But go in with a list of hardware you're interested in. If they won't get it for you, don't know who Zalman or Enermax are, keep shopping. You can often spot the good ones by seeing how long they're in business. 3 years or so and you can have faith they'll be there until your warranty runs out.

I've built 2 machines from Newegg, and have been very happy with their service.

An obscure site (still in it's infancy) called eBay is a good source...

I buy all my power supplies from PC Power and Cooling, not as cheap as some, but they are built like tanks and you never have to worry about getting any noisy power out of them. They also sell silent cooling fans.

Crucial is a great place for memory. Tiger direct sometimes does have awesome deals on their bare bones systems.

Look at the pricing of the Western Digital hard drives on the Western Digital site. They sell also sell them direct and you can get some good deals especially on older models. Definitely make sure you are getting the 3 Year warranty. They are made for workstations instead of Home PCs. Better MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure). The other good thing about the site is they keep track of your warranty if anything should go wrong. I have never had a hassle sending one back that went bad (actually, the two I had to send started to become noisy)

Tiger Direct

I just got a 1GB USB key there for $4.99 after rebates. I am not even going to use software I got with it. I love the key. It is small, and the cover clicks on and will not come off unless you press in on the sides.

NewEgg is a good place to check out. Always good when you know someone has purchased somewhere for years.

Just be careful buying from unknown sites. they can go under and you are done. if you need to return a bad part.

On Flat Panel monitors, there are some great deals everywhere. Most will work fine for computer use, but if you game or watch a lot of movies, make sure the response time is as low as possible. Some are as low as 2ms, while the others can run between 10ms and 16ms. You will get less blur and less eye strain.

I have found some really good deals on electronics - PCs, LCDs, cameras, hard drives, etc. on www.ecost.com. Good to deal with and very fast with good prices. Good customer support as well. I ordered a PC from them on a Friday and they called Monday morning to confirm it was me that ordered it. Had the computer in my hands Thursday.

Is that some special deal sent only to certain customers? I tried to find it on Dell's site but couldn't. Matter of fact, I didn't even see Sony monitors there at all.

Just wondering as I might be interested in getting a couple at that price.

Newegg is good...
Tiger direct is better.
If you check their website sale page weekly for a year you will find enough equipment to build a nice computer for about $75. No Joke.
Sales to get rid of overstocks. Great products. Only have to deal with rebates but that is not a problem. Get it in 6-8 weeks for full rebate. 1 week if they keep $10 off of it.
