looking a boat w/ this engine. vro gone, says it was rebuilt, but neglected after rebuild, h2o pump is gone as it has sat for 2 years. any inherited special things i should look for other than the normal. it's on a possible project boat. tilt pump is shot, along with shift & throttle cables.

Ahh, big bore looper. May be a little more finicky than the crossflow motors but all in all a great motor. Tons of torque. Mine has seen 12 years of salt and still going strong.

I just purchased this same motor on a project boat, the one I have runs very well, and other than changing the impeller and oil I dont think I need to do anything else. have you found any common issues with this motor yet?

I had an '85 J140, basically the same motor, just 20 more HP. Had some warranty induction problems in first two years, OMC replaced the adapter plate and all four carbs and the motor was bulletproof for 20 years. Only replacement was regulator/rectifier and a prop shaft seal replacement caused by mono. A very strong, easy to start motor, which never let me down.

i tought you know all that stuff already TD.

the only bad thing i have to say about the v4 loopers is that they love gas and dont like to troll for long periods of time without fouling plugs.
i would upgrade to the 93 tstat system and get rid of the valve.

good luck

I used to troll all the time ... probably 50% or more of run time, never a problem, but I didn't use surface gap plugs either. BTW, I used VRO II (replaced under warranty VRO @ ~ year 2) until I sold the boat and it never failed.

Hi TD. Buddy of mine has the same motor, same year. Loves gas even more than my 140hp, dislikes trolling, Converted him to premix a couple of months ago. He has had it for about 10 years and runs great with the usual basic maintenance. This has been a freshwater only motor. He likes it for it's reliability and so do I. No calls to go and tow him in unlike some other folk I know.
