Re: 135hp evinrude

The 135 came out in 1973. It was a 125 that had the bubble exhaust added for the first time. It was made through the 1976 model year, then changed to the 140 in 1977. I ran one for years and thought it was a great engine. There were a lot of these engines around, and parts are generally available, esp on the used market. The trim system has not been sold for years, but I think you can still get many of the repair parts for it. New ignition parts are still avail, but pricey. I would check the lower unit oil for water intrustion, squirt a dab of oil in the cylinders, then turn the engine over and do a compression check. If it does not make good compression numbers, it is a tired engine in need of rings. I would not run it without installing at least a new water pump impeller, probably a thermostat too. Check the fuel hoses under the cowl-if they are dry rotted-replace them. Carbs may need rebuilding also, depending on how it was put away for storage. Factor these costs into the purchase price. Does it come with controls, cables and prop?

Re: 135hp evinrude

We had a lot of water pump trouble in those days. If the paint on the heads and block is discolored or burnt, avoid it like the plague. And if it is OK and you do get it, replace the water pump impeller and/or if it still has the aluminum housing, a new kit which includes a plastic housing and stainless liners. And as mentioned already, make sure you get the control and cables-that's part of the motor.

Re: 1976 135hp evinrude Weight?

ok just talked to the guy...he said it is a 1976 135 evinrude...what is the weight on this motor? he said it probably about 500lbs! that its huge...

he said it has about 200hours on a rebuilt head and a rebuilt lower unit with a stainless prop but no tilt and trim ...but its been sitting for 4 yrs outside on the ground....he said it ran when he took it off but bought another boat.... he said he'd sell it for a couple hundred bucks.....what ya think?
think my tilt and trim from my 120 force would work with it?

The 135EL76 weighs 271 pounds.

The T&T for 135ETL76 adds 27 lbs if you have that model.

The Tilt and Trim units that will button up to that moter are from 1973-1976 85HP, 115HP and 135HP, And 85HP and 115HP from 1977. The shock absorbers have to be changed as well for the change.

The CMC T&T is a better choice.

The motor is not that hard to tilt by hand.

ezeke thanks for that info...so this model prob came without a tilt and trim then, my force prestolite TNT wouldnt work on it?...i think i'm gonna pass on this motor.. i found a couple other evinrude that are being sold "running" ..so i'm gonna check on them... i really like tilt and trim dont think i want to spend the money to buy one after buying the motor....

but if he sells it too me for $100 i'll buy it so i can learn to work on it and for a winter project.

thanks again...

You pays yur money an you takes yur chances. I wouldn't believe a thing the guy says. What the heck, the stainless prop is worth a few bucks.
