Recent rebuild, no WOT????? (several pics)

That was one of the issues also with my 79 evinrude. I had the coil wires reversed which wouldnt let me get over 2500. Good Luck!

Dhadley......... Let me guess, rookie mistake............. LOL. I'm sure hoping your right on this. If it does, you'll likely hear me yelling like a wild man all the way down there in florida....... d:) .......Thank you.................I'll let you know, real soon, if this was in deed the fix. Now I'm currious on the break-in. I've idled this rebuild for nearly an hour already. Start over, or proceed to phase two with an hour at 3K, assuming this fixes things?

If that was the problem it should run like a tiger now. Good Luck!

Once you fire it up you'll know right away if it's fixed. I don't think you have to start over with the break in but I'd still be careful. We may still have some issues because the port side was firing 180 degrees out. The heat cycles weren't right when it was running like that. I'd guess that once you get everything sorted out that you'll be ready to start "phase 2" of breaking it in.

Am I invisible to you guys or what. One other thing I thought of.Assuming your plug wires are correct, but are the primary wires to the coils right. You may have a set of wires backwards. Some years have plug on wires for the primary (small)coil wires, some go into the amphenol connector, the coils without the plug on primaries could also accidently switched to the wrong cylinder.Ex. coil 1 on cyl. 2 ,if you suspect it just flip flop the spark plug wire to confirm.I'll bet it something simple

mikesea......... I responded to your message earlier in the thread. I suppose you must have missed it. I don't fully understand what you are referring to when you say "primary wires to the coils". But I do know what a blue stripe is........... LOL .......... and I also know where it's supposed to be going, and that I had the firing order 180* out on the port side via switching those two coils. As far as it being this simple to fix, I sure hope so. I know this would certainly explain the sluggishness of the powerhead. I'm sure crossing my fingers. Thanks for your input. It was most certainly appreciated.................. ALAN

Dhadley........... One last question on the break in procedure, once again assuming this takes care of my problem. Is it best to run at 3000 rpm for a straight hour or is it best done in small increments? I'm thinking, bring it up on plane for say 3-5 minutes or more, stop, fish a little while, bring it back on plane, stop, etc...........Is there a preference or a suggested meathod? Or is both meathods equally as effective? Just curious. Thanks again!!!............... ALAN

Just messing with ya,the primary wires are the small ones with the stripes. In the future ,think blue for sky,if you do any trim and tilt stuff, same holds true ,blue sky, green ground(grass).I KNOW you are going to be real happy next time you run it up.

Until Dhadley gets back to you.

I've used the same breakin procedure several times.

I don't really think it matters if you stop and go or just run an hour straight.

As long as you don't stay at one rpm, for more then 20 seconds or so.

And and avoid running in the 3k-4k rpm range.

After this phase, I then run through the whole range, with occasional short runs at WOT.

Still avoiding any duration at 3k-4k, until after 10 hours.

KYHunter........... I've been thinking about you. Havent seen you visiting the board much. Hope everything your way is going OK. Thanks for the advice. Can you post a link to that process you use again. I've been looking for it, but for some reason can't seem to locate it again. Thanks a bunch.................. ALAN

P.S. How 'bout those carb pics? Does the float adjustments look exactly the way you like to set them? They are ever so slightly higher on the back end as per yours and R.Johnsons instructions. Too, I didn't use any sealant on the core plugs. Any way to test for leaks prior to reinstalling them? I've heard mixed opinions on the sealant. It kind of makes sense, to me, to leave it out. I'd say it would easily clog the low speed idle passages if one wasn't careful how much was used. I sure hope I'm good to go now. We'll see tonight if this rain would just go away for a few hours.

Well.........rain or no rain, I got excited about all this. Soooo..........I replaced the carbs, got everything back together, double checked my link and sync, and got this 'ol girl fired back up again!!! I really feel confident that this was most definitely my fix. I'm not sure if anyone remembers my other thread on all this, but the port side was never heating up like I thought it should. I could hold my hand on that head for an eternity. But I could only manage about 15 seconds on the starboard side. NOW, the temps seem to be pretty well even on both sides. Too, she sounds much different to me. Absolutely NO instance of a cough, or hiccup, for the entire time it idled. I went ahead and idled her on the muffs for about 15 minutes to make sure I wasn't going to run in to an overheating situation once on the water. Everything went very very well. She got up to 130* and felt very close to even on both sides. Rain or shine, I HAVE to know if she's going to turn loose now. Tomorrow............... WE RIDE!!!! Wish me luck gentlemen!!!! And listen closely Dhadley........... I don't want you to miss hearing me make a fool of myself..............d:)

Re: Recent rebuild, no WOT????? (several pics)

Sorry,

I haven't been able to get back to you. But , it sounds like you've got her running well. Everything is fine here, thanks for asking. I am in the process of buying a home , and have been real busy with that. Not much time, for anything else. I should be done with the process by the end of the week . I hope your problems have been solved. Once you get her running correctly. You'll have a very dependable , like new motor. That should outlast all of us.

Good _ Luck,

KYHunter
