Hiya,

The SP that are in my 84 25XD Merc are NGK BUHW although according to the manual it should be using BUHW-2, is this an issue?, what the difference between the 2?

Thanks and regards

If it is not what is in the manual or an acceptable cross referenced plug you could be in touble. You are running a plug in a differant heat range and might have the wrong length threads.

Considering that NGK plugs are about $2.75 each just replace them. Cheaper than a rebuild. Why take chances...........

Our 44 cu.in. Mercury racing engines use those plugs and differant yearly manuals call for one or the other plugs, so I called NGKs service line and the fellow I talked to said the plugs were the same heat range but the gap between the center electrode and ground was about .005 to .008 larger on the BUHW-2 plugs causeing a slightly higher (Hotter) voltage in the firing of the plug to help prevent idle fouling

Pete,

Using the wrong plugs can be very bad.
As mentioned, the wrong heat range could cause the Piston to blow a hole.

Buy new plugs.

When I went to my dealer to get new Champions for my '74 650, the dealer stated that his book now said to use NGK's. So that's what mine has now. Can't remember what number they are though.
