Im an inland lake man so my knowledge of seafaring vessels is limited but I've allways wondered why fishing trawlers have no foward windows (aside a flying bridge) and usually have a slanted/stepped build. Any distinct advantage to this? What is the reason? Just curious.

Re: Dumb Trawler Question

The label "trawler" gets applied to a lot of different designs these days. Please supply a photo of what you had in mind, and we can answer better.

Seems to be a pretty standard industry design. I was just wondering what the reason was or if there were any design advantages

Re: Dumb Trawler Question

From your first description and the Hatteras link it sounds like you have one of these in mind?

http://www.hatterasyachts.com/54ext.cfm

Which is not considered to be a "trawler". Check the Hatteras info and you will see that it is a "convertible" type. Other common terms for this type are "sport fisherman" or "battlewagon". The guys that run these always use the flybridge, have no need for an inside helm. So no windows on the front mainly to cut down on maintenance. They just get messed up with spray anyways.

Here is a photo of a yacht that is more often referred to as a trawler -

As you can see, very different in design from that Hatteras. The hull is loosely modeled after commercial trawlers. What is known as a semi-displacement hull type. The superstructure is a traditional raised pilothouse style. Put the two design elements together and you have a modern day trawler.

they were designed to take heavy weather, stay out and fish, gotta make a living, there are a lot of boats that have no forward glass, except for the pilot house. this is designed so waves breaking over the bow doesn't break the glass.

Re: Dumb Trawler Question

KCook is correct I mispoke when I refered to the stying as a trawler I was inquiring about a "converiable". Which now that you explain it makes sense. Thats why I ask the experts, thank you.
