i'm going look at a 96' johnson 112 SPL tommorow that has possible bad compression on it.....it comes with 2 SS props and controls...for $500...he said it looks good cosmetically, but it has been on a boat that stays in saltwater..how much would a rebuild cost if i did the work myself? also do you think its worth buying this motor to do this?

Kajun37............. The cost of rebuilding can vary dramatically based on the extent of damage which occurs at the time the motor "went down". You really have no idea as to what parts you'll need until after you've dismantled the powerhead and visually inspected the parts for damage. The crank and block are the most costly items to replace. And you won't know anything about their condition until after you've dismantled it. I wouldn't start to rebuild with less than a grand, or more, on hand. You may get by without needing all of it, but it's better to have and not need, than to need and not have. Find out more about the compression. Might just be in bad need of a good decarbing to get the compression back up, if it's low in compression on all cylinders that is. If this doesn't work you might try dismantling, honing the cylinders, and re-ringing the pistons. But like I said earlier, you won't know about any damage until AFTER you've popped the top on it. Post the results of a compression test. Others here will likely be of more assistance with these readings. Too, it doesn't cost you anything to check it. I'm not at liberty to offer any suggestions on the effects of salt water on marine equiptment. Very little of it found here in KY.......LOL........ But from what I've read about it, well............Dhadley is in florida. Maybe he, or one of the others "in-the-know", will stumble upon your thread shortly. I really don't want to comment on that. Best of luck to ya.....................ALAN

The cost will depend on alot of variables. As far as amount of damage done . Both , internal and external, ( salt water).

If you don't really know what your looking for, as far as damage.

It might be best to ask a good local mechanic, to check it out .

It shouldn't be too costly , to get it looked at.

The parts alone , are worth more then he's asking.

Good- Luck,

Are you going to be taking pictures of this motor ? (cosmeticaly looks good).

A ten year old salt engine is probably only worth this much because it has 2 SS props.

Re: approx cost for a rebuild

i'll bring my compression tester and spark tester with me and give it a good testing....the guy said it sounds like it runnings on 2 or 3 cyl's and he ran it like that for awhile since he didnt need much power...i'm hoping its an electrical problem.

yea i hate to buy this for a rebuild then run into what i'm running into with my force...i have broke so many boltheads on it.....i got 4 bolts broken on the head..so i cant even take the head off to see into the pistons...had to go in from the exhaust cover to find out i had blew a piston....and its from being in saltwater..bolts were rusted bad.

if the compression is bad i'll ask him if i can pull the head off and check the condition of the inside before i buy it :)

well thanks for the advice...i'll report back tommorow with results of the tests.

well went out an took a look at it today...nice looking motor but it was locked up , i couldnt turn the flywheel and the battery was dead...i took out the spark plugs but they were kinda rusty and one cylinder had rust on the face of piston....it probably got swamped during out last storm since it stayed in water, wish i would have the cash to buy it for a long time project motor but i need to find a working motor lol......oh well....back to searching....

Did it sink?Does the wiring look bad.Does the gearcase look good, how about the trim unit.Does it come with controls, gauges etc.I ask because. If you think you might want to throw the dice,if the powerhead is total trash, meaning bad crank, block, connecting rods. You then have 2 options. Find a decent powerhead, use it or rebuild that one. Or part out the trim unit ,which is good for 300 on ebay.the gearcase 3-5 hundred and thats without trying. You got a littlle work, but you get your cash back, and maybe a set of wiring. If the crank, block, and connecting rods are good, you putting it together and having machine work done should be a thousand or lower. But go on ebay and look at what those parts would cost if yours are bad.A rebuild from a company ,figure 600 a holeor 2400.And you need your carbs and electrical. That is why sinking is important. If it sunk, dont bother unless you have a donor ppowerhead with parts.

the boat didnt sink but i really dont know.. it was floating.....but we had a bad storm not long ago.."ernesto" and the guys dock was all jacked up..and boat was tied to it.. it probably took on alot of water but didnt completely sink the boat..prob enough to pickle it....i'm not gonna buy it....he said he was gonna bring it to the dump so i told him dont do that i'll take it for a project...then he said he'll see if they give him anything for it when he buys a new 4 stroke... if not he would give it too me.....as much as i'd like to rebuild this i really need a running motor....october thru febuary is the best fishing time around here....striper season and big catfish season...i might have to stop being so cheap and cough up some more money for a decent motor lol my ceiling is $2k...but i'd love to keep it at 1k....i got a few more prospects to look at though.
