How do I know it's circulating water?

I'm a newby when it comes to outboard motors. I just bought a nice little 6 hp Johnson (1973) and finally got it started after rebuilding the carb. Where is the water returned after cooling the motor? Is it visible from above the surface (like a pisser hole)?

Thanks

It should blow a healthy splatter out the exhaust relief hole on the rear of the midsection about half way down, at all speeds.

You can also feel the block and head while it's running. They will/can get to 120 degrees (hot water heaters normal setting is 140 degrees for a reference) after running at high rpm's for 15 min or so.

Additionally, water will come out the exhaust with exhaust if you can see it...but you would have to be on muffs and I don't think they make them for engines that small.

You can rig up a test tank to check temp and water flow. If you have the engine on a boat & trailer put a sealed garbage container or small metal drum under fill and check. Good Luck!

I have an 80's model 7.5 Johnson and it pees out the starboard side. I do not believe the smaller motors have a thermostat so it should start to pee right after startup.
