Re: IT'S BACK!!! Added pic of lifter!!!!

Well, hate to tell you this, but ya got a couple of parts missing there Tony. I would bet if you pulled the oil pan you would find them. Might look in the valley of the lifters and see if they are there. Look in your Merc manual, it shows all the parts.
Years ago I tried to rebuild lifters, super clean, careful inspection, very careful clean assembly, and they didn't work.
Personally, I have used new lifters with old cams after very careful inspection of the cam.
NO defects allowed, or you will be doing it all again.
You also need to look at the pushrods. The ends need to be perfect, and roll them on a piece of glass, any wobble and they are junk.
Didn't you notice any miss in the engine when it was idleing? I, for one, can't imagine lifters falling apart on an engine and it still runs smooth.

Not waiting for the winter.............already bought the parts and plan on doing it this w/e.

Don, the lifter didn't fall apart until I started it after I soaked it in MM oil. When I started it I had the rocker on the loose side and that's when it came apart..........when the push rod "fell" inside the lifter w/o the plunger in it.

I will be inspecting the lifter valley for the missing parts........

esiest way to check the lifter foot is to place the foot against the side of another lifter or a known good straight edge. if the foot is flat or concave its toast. inspect the shiny portion of the cam lobe nose. if its shiny all the way across the lobe nose the cam is toast.

That may have been when the plunger came out but I got a feeling the retainer had been missing for a while.

Glad to see you got a handle on it.

Intake and lifter in an hour? Sounds like your bustin the book, ready to go flat rate?

Dont forget that leakdown test.

Once you get the lifter back in and the valve(s) adjusted, do the cylinder leak test before you install the intake manifold. If the head needs to come off you'll be way ahead of the game.

Again, check the valve stem height, may tell a story all by it's self.

Do the leak down with both rocker arms loose, before you adjust the valves. It is easier than trying to roll the engine to where both valves are closed plus you will be sure they are closed.

Measured the hieght of the valve stem yesterday.........seems fine.

Don't expect a problem with the valves being burnt or not seating properly, engine was only run for a mater of seconds with the valve hanging open.

lilmandavis, If Tony is not interested, please contact me at ## . I just recently found out that my '97 engine has a flat lifter based cam and not a roller. I would be interested in cam and rollers plus other supporting parts.

Be aware that factory roller cam blocks are different from flat tappet blocks and stock roller cam and lifters can not be retrofitted without a lot of machine work to the block. Aftermarket roller cam and lifters are an easier job but $$$

Buttanic,

It is a '97 block which is machined and ready for roller cam, as far as I know. I saw the threaded holes for the roller lifter retaining spider, after I removed the intake. It is my understanding that all '87 and up blocks come this way. Am I wrong?

If it has the threaded holes for the spider than i would guess all the other machining may be done which is on the sides of the valley for the taller roller lifters and on the front of the block for the cam retainer plate.
