Mercury ID help

I'm a transfer over from the Evinrude forums. I need help with id for a Merc. Serial # 5342549 6hp has 60 on the rear housing. I've searched the forum but things do not add up. The hood style is like a 1990's. The serial number (as for as I can tell) does not even come up unless its a 1968?

Thanks for the reply--I've looked at this chart already. If this is a 1968 that would mean that there was 30,000 + mfg that year. It just occurred to me that the serial # is on the transom mount--maybe this has been changed? Is there any other place to find a serial #?-------------Now that I read your post AGAIN I guess it probably has been changed thus the wrong serial #. Anyway else to id?

It might also be stamped on the right rear of the block. Are you sure it's a 6 hp? That serial # is for a 1979 4.5 hp

It says 6hp on the rear of the housing--it says 60 on the sides of the housing --its a two cyl and the boat it was on yesterday moved along pretty good if it was a 4.5. I will check the block.

I guess the bracket could have been replaced.

This is a difficult motor to identify. Do you have a pic?

According to the serial number, the mercury website describes it as follows:

mercurypartsexpress.com

Serial Number: 05342549
Model Number: 1007209

Which would be a 7.5 or 9.8hp motor.

1979 model year

Picture below is a 1979 9.8 model. The 7.5 would be the same.
