01 windstar's heat not working. Brrrrrrrr!

The problem appears to be in the "fly-by-wire" climate controls or at least the temp sliders, or the thing they control. When I raise the temp I can hear a repetitive cilcking/popping sound from behind the dash. I got it to warm up once by moving the temp sliders reeeeeal slow but I haven't been able to do it again. Anybody have any what's going on and how I might fix it? Thanks.

thats a tough one, could be a vacume line, climate control, heater control valve, heater core, is the radiator full of water..

The clicking noise is probably the blend door motor not able to move the blend door. Two possibilities, the motor drive gears are bad , or something has fallen into the air duct and is jamming the door. Which will also cause motor drive gear failure.

good point RP I have found lots of stuff between those doors mostly ink pins, had to pull a dash once to remove a turtle

It does sound like stripped gears... Is this something I can easily get to or am I gonna have to rip out the entire dash for a 2 dollar part?

it may just be the control pull that first and watch the movement, see if the noise is actually the control, I think you can buy the plastic gears for a ford separately

oh and if it has the three separate knobs pull the knob off and see if it's stripped or broken

Thanks guys. My Haynes manual does not have much info on this so that diagram is helpful.

It sound like it could be the blend door if it is like an Explorer.
