8) I just bought a late sixties, early seventies 20 horse merc, the dealer I bought it from said to use 105 gear grease, not 90 wght. lube, he said it was better for these old motors, anyone ever heard of this? always used 90 wght. in my other motors.

Re: gear lube

What brand is you motor by 1960 most major engine manufactures had went to 90# hypoid oil, some dealers will use 105 to help oil contamination because they don't want to mess with replacing seals or installed seals on a bad shaft and it didn't fix the problem. Kind of a bandaid deal

Re: gear lube

its a merc. had 90 wght. in it looked ok, just old, the motor had been on the rack at least 5 yrs, dealer tuned it up, rebuilt carb. he said he puts 105 in all the old engines he sells, he said they all leak a little & 105 is not affected by water, he said to check the lube twice a season, if there is any water to drain it out and add more lube. this guy has been in a boat & motor dealer for over 30 yrs. has a good reputation. he has to know more than me.

Re: gear lube

I use Lubriplate brand 105 lube in my worn out farm machinery gearboxes. It is sold as an engine rebuilding lube (stays in place till the oil starts circulatiing) but it works great on gearboxes.

Unless you have a leak somewhere, I don't know why someone would recommend it for lower units. I doubt that it will hurt it but not being a marine gear lube it might not possess the right "sticky" additives to help it adhere to the metal parts and resist water washout.

Also if you have a leak you need to fix it. Leaks in lower units are a no-no. Ok on farm machinery as it's not submerged..........better not be......hope it's not. 8)
