I need to get an impact wrench for my air compressor. I’m not sure what to get. I see harbor freight has many and some that are very cheap while others a considerable more. Some are single hammer and some are dual. My compressor puts out 5.6 SCFM @ 90 PSI; 7.2 SCFM @ 40 PSI. I’m looking for something with the grunt to knock nuts loose. For instance on my motor mounts on my 800 OMC the nuts where so damn tight I could not budge them. I went to the auto parts store and the guy whips out an electric impact wrench and amazingly it knocked them loose like it was nothing. Didn’t even have to hold the shaft the nut was attached to. I was amazed!

What amount of torque would suggest at a bare minimum? I’m looking for a good wrench that is not too expensive. I am leery about harbor freight. Many of their tools are absolute junk. But sometimes you can get a hold of stuff that is of good quality and cheap at harbor freight

Re: Help on choosing an Air Impact Wrench.

My dad was an auto mechanic all his life and always had Chicago Pnuematics CP734's.
I'm an auto tech for 32 years now and I've always had CP734's. I'm on my 3rd one now. They cost about $125-150 depending if they are on sale or not.
Ingersol Rand is a fine gun as well as the high torque Snap-on's but you'll pay at least a c-note more.

I've got a Snap-On that I've had for nearly 10 years,......
It's a 600ft.lb. wrench,.......

The Least I'd buy would be an Ingersal-Rand,........

I personally Wouldn't waste my money on the Lesser Wrenchs.........
And,....
I've never found Any Quality Wrenches at Harbor Frieght......
Ya Get What you Pay For,......... Especially with Tools........

[colour=blue]I just changed the wheels on my car with one of those cordless snapon impact wrenches (24v I think). Worked a treat.

Pnuematically speaking, Ingersol Rand gets my vote.

I have one of the cambel hausfield's that came with my little compressor, it's probably the HF equivelant. ZERO power. It can barely change tires on a car.

If I need to do any real work I borrow my brothers' Mac or Chicago Pneumatic.

Maybe your compressor is not putting out enough air for the tool. I hear 5 SCFM is needed for most impact wrenches.
