1988 johnson tracker pro series 90 HP
No starting power. When I turn the key to 'run,' I have power on my voltage gauge (12v), but get NO response when I try turning to the "start' position. I have checked the fuses, I can start the engine by "hot wiring" at the motor with the solenoid and yellow wire...so I do not think it is a problem with the starter. The battery is fully charged. Would you recommend replacing the ignition switch?
Could this be a problem in the throttle (i.e. wiring in neutral/drive positions)? Possible short somewhere in the wiring?Any help will be appreciated.

Check the "yellow" wire for voltage at the solenoid when you turn the key to start. Check the same wire at the back of the key switch when you turn the key to start.

Shorts blow fuses -- opens do not. With a voltmeter, measure voltage at the small terminal on the starter solenoid while someone turns the key to START. If 12V is not present, there is a wiring problem between the switch and the solenoid. If 12V is present and you don't hear the solenoid click when the key is turned to START, the solenoid is probably toast but check the ground connection and then retest. Since you can jump the solenoid the starter is not the problem. I suspect the ignition switch is bad or the neutral start switch is bad.

Thanks for input. I will try to replace the ignition switch first. What would I need to do to replace a faulty Neutral safety switch???

u need to test voltage or ohms

I'm unsure about your testing bjmess.....taking for granted that you jumped 12Volts to the yellow wire on the solenoid small terminal and the solenoid picked up...

Then....as posted....check for 12Volts at the "S" terminal on the ignition switch when the key is turned to "START".

If no voltage, likely the switch is bad.

If there is voltage then, check for voltage from the "START IN NEUTRAL SWITCH" or with an ohms meter, check the switch for "MAKE/BREAK" function.
