Has anyone used Amsoil synthetic gear lube in their outdrive? What do you think of it?
Reason I ask.In my Omc Cobra I have been using Pennzoil synthetic75-90 gear lube. Now no one in this area has it.I was going to service it again for the winter but all I can find in my area is dino lube and the stuff merc has. What is everyone else using in there Cobras.

You can use the Mobil 1 GL5 synthetic 75w-90 as well.

...or just about any gear lube out there, but they say synthetics will protect better if there is water intrusion in the drive.

I use the Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube in my Volvo Penta SX drive. I was told by the VP dealer that VP synthetic gearlube was made by Amsoil.

AMSOIL has been around for years, and seems to be a decent product. But I haven't found a reason to use it.

Just wondering if anyone has found a reason to use a different oil ?

The question is why do you stop using what the manufacturer reccommends ... and use something totaly different.

I've seen lots of drives fail, but never because of the brand of oil.

I stopped using what the manufacturer recommends because, one I never used it to start with. The reason for that is,I bought my boat in another state used 6 years ago, they may of had a lot of omc products there and at that time but where I live now you can't buy anthing but merc stuff. You go into a marine store here and say omc and most of them say om who?So I buy the best I can of some other brand.Since I have had my boat I have used synthetic drive oil in it.
Hope it will stay to gether along time.It shifts great and runs great.

I was told by the VP dealer that VP synthetic gearlube was made by Amsoil.

Of course he did [snicker, snicker].

I do a lot of slow trolling (225 Honda), where rpm/speed is important. I had to reduce "in-gear" idle by 100 rpm after installing AMSOIL. Mileage also went up about 5% when put in my truck some years ago. I don't think you'll be disappointed ... d:)
