I am going to swap motors and want to put new rubber on the outdrive. I am not sure of the exact model of the outdrive. I tried to get numbers of it as best I could. On the lower unit in front of the prop it said Volvo Penta "852742 space FR383-3" Could have been "FA, not FR".
In the engine compartment, up next to the transom, there is a plate. I belive the serial number #1101574338, another untitled number on that plate was 868130. Below is a link with pictures.
Any help identifing my outdrive would be great. Also, what all gaskets would I need to get?

Re: Outdrive Identification...Penta???...

What year is the boat? It looks like a late 80's Bayliner. From the looks of things, my guess is the transom shield and drive is not original to the boat. It's a newer model DP-A or newer transom shield or drive.
Look for a SN and Model plate on the top of the drive drive just under where the helmut connects to the upper gear box. You should see a model number, serial number and gear ratio and a spec number. See if you can read them.
That engine is a total mess....... along with the wiring. I see why you are changing the engine. But don't forget that wiring mess.

PS: Here is a drive chart, it may help.

It's a 85 Trophy. Yes, the engine is a mess. I picked up an original replacement penta motor with all the accessories on it. I plan on replacing most of the wiring.
I belive I found the plate you are talking about, However, it only has two numbers on it. one is the serial number #1101574338 and the other number is on the top right hand corner of the plate and it says 868130. No other numbers on that plate. I will try and look for anything else tomorrow in the light.

That SN, is for the transom shield. It was originally from an 87 Skipper Island boat and was hooked up to an AD31 Volvo diesel. While the transom sheild is the same for gas and diesel, the drives aren't and you need to find the SN of the drive.
I think you misunderstood where to find the SN tag on the drive, so here is a picture.
It's going to take some numbers off that tag to find out what drive you actually have.
Bayliner never used that model Volvo in their boats originally, so someone has changed everything, and from the looks of the engine, didn't do that great a job.

Ok, I'm pretty sure I found the right one this time. It was a bit hard to read but this is what I got.

Top right corner 854020

middle, DP A 230

bottom, 3102094828 X

You do have a DP-A drive. Not the one that came with the transom shield, but it is still a DP-A.
To find out what gear ratio you have, put the drive in gear and turn the engine over until the propshaft makes one complete revolution. Should take either 1.78 or 1.98 engine revolutions
The plate says 2.30 which would be a diesel ratio, but the gears may have been replaced, or you may just have the wrong ratio all together.
