Hi All, I just got given to me an '86 8hp Evinrude model CE8RCDE (thus I believe it's an '86) that has a busted rod and a chipped piston. I have not torn it apart yet (it came with the head off and the piston in a 'lil jar) but was wondering, will I probably have a bent crankshaft? If so how would I tell once I get it apart? Is there any best case scenerio where I will only need a new rod? Or will I need a piston for sure also as there's a small piece missing from the skirt. I will try to attach a photo, thx, Steve

To get a picture to appear in the post all you normally have to do is enclose the URL in the IMG tags ( img and /img in squre brackets). using the facility in "more" bbcode It must of course be an acceptable image file such as a jpg, which yours is .

But you do have to include the http:// bit as well to give it the full url

I can't quite make out, from the shape of the piston crown, which side of the piston is damaged. One side will be the thrust side and also control the opening of the transfer port. If the other side it may allow the crank case to open up to the exhaust port. For those reasons I think it must be replaced. A bit more difficult to judge if the crank shaft is bent. If the bearing surface is undamaged and there is no other signs of damage I would feel inclined to assume it is OK and only replace it if becomes obvious something is wrong.

Usually, if the rod goes like yours did - at the crank journal, then it is likely the crank is gone, too. Sometimes you can clean up the crank journal with emory cloth, but most of the time you're looking for another crank. That is not an uncommon issue with the 100:1 ratio motors of the mid-late 1980s.

I think I might have a powerhead with a similar issue, which means I might have one good piston and rod if you need them...

By the look's of the bearing surface on the rod, I doubt if the crank will be usable. That rod, and piston took quite a beating.

OK, I took a better picture of it. Yes, I would be interested in the rod and piston, thanks, but it sounds like I'll need a crank also! Also if you note there's tick marks at the other end of the piston, how would they have occurred?

Do what i say so that the link to the photo looks like:

{img}http://www.ovhi.ca/rod2.jpg{/img}
but with square brackets instead of curly ones and you will get your pic

I reckon the damage to the top of the piston was caused by bits of debris going up the transfer port into the combustion chamber. You sould also look at the inside of the cylinder block around the transfer port and the exhaust port for damage, and the head as well

If you are able to salvage the engine block, look it over very carefully on the inside, there are bound to be small bit's, and piece's stuck in the crevice's. Make sure you get those all out.

9 out of 10 the crank is junk. You should be able to see the rod journal. That will be the major problem. That rod will let go a LOT quicker than the crank bending. I just trashed a AD11 7 1/5 block with the same problem...trashed a rod. Crank rod big end bearing surface was a joke, and way beyond any clean up. Probably what happened is little lubrication or blocked water cooling, and piston got hot, puts extreme pressure on the rod, which crushes out the oil film on the rod big end, and everything is downhill from there. Pull the Reed Plate too...piece can fly up there and trash it to. Best bet pull the whole thing apart, look it over. Parts on Ebay and elsewhere. Good chance it will run again.
