I have a 1989 Evinrude, 90 horsepower that currently has the engine block removed, which also means all electrical, etc.
I'm moving and I'm supposed to be towing the boat to storage as I type this, except I can't get the lower unit to disengage so that I can manually lift it for towing.

I have tried to manually manipulate the gear lever that runs into the lower shaft to see if having it in either gear releases the lock. (I'm assuming there is some sort of lock on the hydraulic to keep the engine from flying up when you put it in reverse...)

Anyone know how I can get this lower unit disengaged so I can lift it and tow it? I'm time-desparate here--I'm supposed to be out of this house in a few days and still have packing to do, (which of course, I need the boat out of the garage to get to that stuff! )

Just find the 2 wires that go to the trim motor. A green one and a blue one. Get a 12volt battery or even a battery charger with at least 25 amps. Put the green wire to negative and the blue wire to positive. If your tilt motor is good the motor will raise.

Or....look at the bottom of the starboard (right) transom bracket. Look for a hole with a screw head at the back of it. This is the manual release screw. Back it out two to three turns and you should be able to lift the engine up manually and lock it up for towing.
