Convert to tiller steer 72 evi 40hp (some new good news)

I have a 1972 40 hp (electric start) sitting in my basement which is set up for remote control. I'd like to set it up for tiller steer and throw it on a cheap hull.

Do I need anything else besides the tiller arm to make this work?

Thanks

The link between where the throttle shaft turns 90 degrees and goes up into the powerhead and the throttle pointer is different (longer or shorter..). You'll want that and the gear that goes on the end of it and meshes with the gear in the tiller arm. Other than that, just the throttle arm, nut, bolt, and large cup washer to hold it on, and the brass washer that goes between the tiller arm and the steering/swivel bracket.

The electrics are pretty simple to switch.

No, it's set up for controls and a key switch. I want to remove all that crap and simplify things. I don't mind rope starting such a small motor.

Thanks Paul. I'll come back to this thread after I get ahold of the arm from somewhere.

I would keep the electric start. My 35 hp started good with the electric, but was a bear with a rope

It is a simple operation to add a button to start and add a kill switch. Not necessary to have a key switch if you add a switch to disable the starter and hide it somewhere.I did that on my 88 50 Evinrude tiller steer.
Been running like that since new.
While your 40 should fire up easily hand cranking
could get old real fast.

My history here at iboats is a long one of engines that don't/won't run. This engine does not have a charging system which means I'll be removing the battery often to recharge it. Doing that won't be practical for me on an offshore island. If I were to be trailering, things would be different.

If I could do it, I'd gut the block and install squirrels.

Re: Convert to tiller steer 72 evi 40hp

I'd think twice before dumping those creature comforts like elec. start and wheel steering. I am used to a 9.9 on a 14' aluminum v-hull. I just picked up a 16' Lund with a 30hp rope-start, tiller steer. The first time I put it in the water it got flooded and took me about 20 minutes of pulling before it fired. Then after getting going I noticed that the ride was a bit harsh with no real weight toward the bow. I have an opportunity to trade my pristine 89 30hp manual-everything Johnson for a 96 elec. start Evinrude, even though it is a bit "used" looking. I will also look into building a side console for the Lund.
If I were you I'd find a bit larger boat and use what the factory installed.

Re: Convert to tiller steer 72 evi 40hp

While a bit of a pain recharging is not required that often. Our old 18 Evinrude would very easily go a month
of weekends starting and running lights. Sitting un touched for a week at a time.We used only a group 24 regular battery.Never charged more than one month and occasionally longer. You could do a quick connector like those used on battery floor scrubbers and fork lifts etc.
If you wanted to go with a lighter battery a garden tractor battery would serve and a heavy duty might go almost as long as a 24.But might not crank as long.
Of course you could use the electric when its cold and hand crank there after it might save some tiime and curse words.

You can always get a solar battery charger to hook to it. The one's they have today are very good.

How will I know which one? Where can I buy that?

Re: Convert to tiller steer 72 evi 40hp

The pointer is nearly impossible to get off the remote model's shaft, and the gear is nearly impossible to get off the tiller model's shaft. So as long as it has a gear on it to mate with the one on the tiller arm, that's the right one. They both have the same bevel gear at the other end for the 90 degree turn.

The P/N for the shaft with the gear on it is 377273, while the shaft with the pointer on it is 377211. The one you want should be about 9" long.

Re: Convert to tiller steer 72 evi 40hp

Thanks Paul. Twin City is sending me one.

Another question:

When I remove the starter, solinoid, and wiring harness that used to co to the dash, how do I shut the motor off? Do I need to install some kind of switch? Where would this switch be on an original tiller model?

Re: Convert to tiller steer 72 evi 40hp

It varied from year to year, but the wires on your one come out a hole on the front of the lower engine cover right? If so, they filled that hole with the kill switch. Twin City ought to have them by the bushel.

The switch connects to the two magneto leads. One is flying while the other is found on the vacuum cutout switch. Like this:

Re: Convert to tiller steer 72 evi 40hp

I bought the one in the pic last night. It came off a 68 33hp which also takes the 379638.

Thanks for the help Paul, I'll pull this thread back up when parts start arriving.
